Curtain Spinners Species in When the Curtain has fallen | World Anvil

Curtain Spinners

Back when The Curtain still existed, there were times when tears formed on its surface, creating passages between the material and spiritual world. Since the spills of one of them into the other are something that shouldn't happen, it seems that nature created beings that would try to prevent them. The Curtain Spinners were unusual Spirits. While their brethren focused on feeding themselves and growing in power, those spirits of the order were focused only on one thing - fixing the gaps in The Curtain.

Appearance

It seems like there's no uniform appearance for the Curtain Spinners, the only thing common among them being that they look like something that can sew or weave. The ones influenced by nature and animal concepts might look like spiders or silkworms, but the ones who fed on technology will in turn look like sewing machines or looms. The more humanoid ones might have utensils related to sewing, crocheting, or even surgery as their body parts.

How do they work?

Whenever a Curtain Spinner encounters a tear in The Curtain, they start to prepare some thread partially made out of their own body (or produced by it). Then, they start to create a frame for their stitching all around the edge of the tear. Once the frame is created, they start to stretch the threads through the widest part of the gap and slightly pull it together, enough to prevent it from tearing further. They do it multiple times in different directions, making the forming structure resemble the beginning of a spider web. Then, similar to the spider web, they start to place new threads going perpendicularly to the first threads. The next few pulls both close the gap a little and move the new threads closer to the frame (farther closing the tear). Then, the process repeats until the hole in The Curtain is filled.
Since the threads used were made out of the concept of order, to keep the order of The Curtain, they get absorbed by it so as to not imbalance its structure.

Personality

For the most part, Curtain Spinners are completely passive creatures, ignoring anything that goes around them. That changes very quickly should something destroy their creation or create new tears in The Curtain. In that case, they become extremely aggressive, trying to kill anything that does the thing they hate. But no matter how angry they get, they won't leave too far away from their place of work.

Senses

Curtain Spinners have extremely weak sight and hearing. Instead, they are able to sense the density of The Curtain many kilometers around them. That's why unless something kills them on the way (a thing spirits that want to invade the material world for longer often do), one can expect one or more of them to show up soon after even the smallest gap in the fabric of The Curtain shows up.

Reproduction

Whenever they start to work, the easiest way to weaken or even destroy the Curtain Spinner is to pull it away far from their workplace. The farther they get, the weaker they become as they have to stretch themselves and their threads over a large distance.

Going extinct

Since The Curtain doesn't exist anymore, the Curtain Spinners don't have their purpose anymore. Some of them started feeding on other concepts, becoming new types of spirits. Some just stopped doing anything until they starved or were consumed by other spirits. And some became furious, trying to stitch together anything they encountered. It is rumored that the Spirit Tailor once was one of Curtain Spinners, but some think they might be something more ancient.

Curtain Spinners and the Faceless Ones

The Faceless Ones were often at odds with Curtain Spinners. While closing the gaps in The Curtain is also their goal, Faceless Ones cared also about all the things that got on the side they shouldn't be at. So while one team of them went beyond The Curtain to extract something or someone that got sucked in there or tried to push back some malicious spirit that got into the material world, another team was sent to slow down the work of Curtain Spinners for their friends to finish the task first.
