Wood

Supplying around 10-15 megajoules per kilogramme, the burning of wood is still the most common way that heat is generated by the civilisations of Westlo.   Much of the region is densely forested, but there are competing interests in the use of wood as fuel that complicate the picture, especially west of the River Armont.

Properties

Geology & Geography

In the present day, much of the ancient forest in the south west of the region is completely eradicated, with only a few groves kept for aesthetic purposes. Between Duntown and The Wilds, there are carefully managed forests, mainly planted with quick-growing pines that are destined to become fuel.   The Wilds themselves are strictly off-limits for commercial loggers, but there are people around the town of Livey who practice a traditional form of coppicing that promotes the growth of the forest in a managed way. This activity is not uncontroversial, with many devotees of the Dendrach faith believing the Wilds to be sacrosanct.   The forest east of the river, known as the Western Forest, is unexploited by humanfolk, except for those around [Armontvale. This is due to a fear of the orcs and elves who still inhabit the forest and have little love for the humanfolk.   In the area around Hollymargret there is a peculiar band of land that has not been forested. Instead, there is a small area of 'dead forest' that consists only of dead, bare trees. It is not known why these trees have not decayed biologically or been replaced by new growth.
