Sylvester
Sylvester is a sleek, intelligent red ferret and Melvin le Gronx’s most loyal companion. Sylvester has been by Melvin’s side ever since the gnome found him wounded in the rubble near his brother Jeremiah’s home in the Warrens. Though years have passed, Sylvester shows no signs of aging—an unexplained but accepted part of his presence.
Thanks to Melvin’s natural ability to speak with animals, the two communicate freely and effortlessly, sharing thoughts, strategies, and feelings in real time. Sylvester is more than a companion—he’s Melvin’s partner, scout, confidant, and emotional anchor. He’s been instrumental in the party’s success, whether by navigating tight spaces, alerting the group to hidden dangers, or bolting ahead to find help when things go wrong. Jonnie also regularly uses magic to speak with Sylvester, and the two have formed a close bond of their own.
Despite his sharp instincts and ever-alert demeanor, Sylvester is a ferret of indulgence. He has a notable love of alcohol and Jonnie proudly considers him to be his best drinking buddy in the party. At any given moment, he can be found curled up near a half-empty mug, pawing at someone’s drink, or quietly sipping from a small dish filled with whatever was left unattended. No one is quite sure how a ferret gets drunk—or how he avoids hangovers—but Sylvester makes it look easy.
His legend has grown alongside the party’s. Sylvester is not only their beloved companion but the official mascot of their tavern, the Frightened Ferret. In fact, it was his skittish but determined personality that inspired the name. Avi, the party’s neighbor and craftsman, even included Sylvester’s likeness atop the inn’s custom coat of arms—a tiny, wide-eyed ferret clinging to a foaming mug with one paw raised in alarm.
In Melvin’s vision during the Nightmare Bulb incident, Sylvester appeared as one of three beloved companions—alongside Skittle and Eira—who offered him comfort and a sense of home. Though he walks on four legs, Sylvester’s presence looms large in the hearts of the party. He is brave, clever, endlessly expressive, and utterly irreplaceable.
