Murray

Murray is a mysterious figure who once appeared to Jonnie Rames Dio in dreams, guiding him onto a path of magic and music. Whether a divine patron, prophetic vision, or figment of a fevered mind, Murray’s presence marked a turning point in Jonnie’s life. Tall, charismatic, and always seen with an aura of poetic wisdom, Murray spoke not in sermons or commands but in encouragement and metaphor. His appearances ended as abruptly as they began—save for a single night during Jonnie’s downward spiral, when a stranger with Murray’s presence spoke words of comfort at The Copper Cup. The next morning, Jonnie awoke to find the Pick of Oghma in his pocket. Whether this was a drunken dream or a divine encounter remains unclear, but the feeling lingers. Since then, Murray has remained absent. Jonnie has not seen him again, even in dreams.

History

The Dreams

Before Jonnie fully understood his own power, he was visited often in dreams by Murray, a calm and confident figure who helped unlock his magical abilities. These dream encounters never felt like hallucinations; they were grounding, vivid, and full of intention. Through these interactions, Jonnie learned to channel music into magic and began walking the path that led to where he is now. Murray never gave a title, never demanded allegiance, and vanished before Jonnie could ask many questions. The absence of dreams since then left Jonnie wondering whether he disappointed Murray—or imagined him altogether.

The Bender

Following a traumatic confrontation that left Jonnie questioning his own morality and sanity, he fled into the city and spent several days wandering, drinking, and avoiding his companions. On one of those nights, deep within The Copper Cup, a stranger sat beside him. With auburn hair tinged with grey and eyes lined with laugh-wrinkles, the man offered encouragement, wisdom, and kindness that cut through the haze. He never named himself, but Jonnie felt something familiar. The stranger handled his lyre with reverence, praised his musicianship, and vanished almost as if he was never there. The next day, Jonnie awoke at the Yawning Portal with no memory of how he got there—and a new item in his pocket: the Pick of Oghma.

Fitzie’s Visit

After Jonnie broke free from the grip of the Obsidian Quill, his old bandmate Fitzie Blackmore arrived at the Frightened Ferret. Offering him a divine boon, Fitzie implied that someone else, "Boss Man", had sent him. Fitzie never named Murray directly, but his knowing expression, golden eyes, and the feather he left behind suggest a celestial connection. Fitzie’s guidance echoed Murray’s tone and themes, encouraging Jonnie to reclaim his identity and face his destiny.

Relationships

Jonnie Rames Dio – Jonnie was first visited by Murray in his dreams and views him as the source—or at least the catalyst—of his magic. Murray’s disappearance left Jonnie with lingering guilt and uncertainty. Though Jonnie suspects Murray may have reappeared during his bender, he isn’t sure. He’s even less sure what Murray wants from him now—or whether he’ll ever appear again.
