Esvele Rosznar is a noblewoman of the
Sea Ward and a known figure in
Waterdeep’s social scene, famed for her sharp wit, elegant fashion, and striking beauty. She is also the
Black Viper, one of the city’s most elusive and infamous thieves. While her public persona is that of a charitable and flirtatious socialite, her alter ego moves through the underbelly of Waterdeep with precision and confidence, targeting the corrupt and powerful. The Rosznar family, who originally amassed their wealth through slave trading, remains unaware of her double life. The party, however, is fully aware of Esvele’s identity as the Black Viper, and none of them take issue with her continued activities.
Esvele carries herself with elegance and danger in equal measure. Her flirtations are intentional and strategic, but not always manipulative. She and Jonnie have not gotten along, but she finds Kostas utterly delightful. Though no commitments have been made, her renewed chemistry with childhood sweetheart Cassian/Grayson is unmistakable.
History
Legacy of the Rosznars
The Rosznars regained their noble status in recent decades after a long exile for their participation in the slave trade. Esvele, born into the rehabilitated family, quickly grew disillusioned with the hypocrisy of noble society. She began cultivating a second identity as the Black Viper—a masked thief operating with the kind of freedom and agency noblewomen are rarely afforded. In doing so, she reclaimed her own power while exposing the corruption of her peers.
The Gralhund Gala
Esvele attended the Gralhund gala both as herself and as the Black Viper, pulling off a daring heist of the Verdant Coil artifact during the event. Her theft went unnoticed by the majority of guests, though the party and select operatives became aware of her involvement. Her reconnection with Grayson added personal complexity to the evening, but she completed her task without incident and vanished into the night. Her current activities remain unknown.
The Note and the Gift
Though she could not attend the grand opening of the
Frightened Ferret, Esvele sent Grayson a note and a gift for Kostas, a jeweled dagger that
Renaer had been unsuccessful at winning for him. In her note, she playfully acknowledged both Grayson’s brooding demeanor and her ongoing escapades, hinting that her time was claimed by her other calling. She insisted the gift was acquired through one of their preferred, morally ambiguous channels, and encouraged Grayson to join her in mischief sometime soon.
