Warband

Warbands are made up of several packs working in tandem. Under direction of a Balir, they handle operations too difficult for single packs, such as securing a location and scouting territory known to be hostile. They are used extensively when armies clash, as Strumagnir are the most involved leaders on the field. While stealthy movements are usually completed by packs, any organized assault requires a more forceful approach. When a Warband is made up of more than six packs, or when a truly experienced hand is required, Strumbalirs may be called upon to lead the Warband. The Utlaegr usually maintain at least three operational Warbands at all times.

Composition

Manpower

A cohesive unit of between three and eight Packs, accompanied by an additional support retinue and a unit of Bjornhokk, Warbands may number in the hundreds with all men accounted for.

Structure

Balirs or Sturmbalirs lead Warbands, and pass on their orders to their aids, the Umrad. Their role is to pass orders along to the packs via the Magnirs and the Sturmagnirs.

Logistics

Logistical Support

Warbands are accompanied by a support pack, usually numbering a score.

Auxilia

Warbands may call upon a special unit of elite warriors known as the Bjornhokk. These are the warriors amongst warriors, the berserkers of the Utlaegr forces. Bjornhokk are highly respected, and ride alongside the Warband with their own Marr, a rare priviledge afforded not even to the Balir. They are used as shock troops, breaking enemy formations and completing especially difficult tasks, answering only to the Sturmbalir. If none are present, the highest ranking Bjornhokk usually takes provisional command.

Upkeep

Maintaining an operational Warband varies depending on its size, but is usually two to three times the cost of the combined packs, due to equipment maintenance, provisions, and the steep price of Bjornhokk, mostly due to their mounts and their expensive equipment.
