Verdan

In the kingdom of Bastia, the predominant religion is known as "Verdan," a spiritual belief system deeply rooted in reverence for nature, harmony, and compassion towards all living beings.

Mythology & Lore

Verdan mythology is rich with stories and legends that reflect its deep connection to nature, the divine, and the cycles of life. These myths serve to illustrate the teachings of Eldoria, the nature goddess, and provide moral and spiritual guidance to her followers. Here are some key elements and stories within Verdan mythology:

Creation Myths

The Birth of Eldoria: According to Verdan belief, Eldoria emerged from the primordial chaos that existed before the formation of the world. She is said to have shaped the earth, seas, and skies, breathing life into every corner of the natural world. Eldoria's essence permeates all living things, and her spirit can be felt in the rustling leaves, flowing rivers, and whispering winds.   The Four Sacred Elements: Verdan mythology holds that Eldoria created the world using four sacred elements: earth, water, fire, and air. Each element is associated with a guardian spirit who aids Eldoria in maintaining the balance of nature. These spirits are often invoked in rituals and prayers for their protection and guidance.

Legends and Heroes

The Tale of Liora and the Great Tree: Liora, a devoted follower of Eldoria, is celebrated in Verdan mythology for her unwavering faith and bravery. According to legend, she saved a sacred grove from destruction by a greedy king who sought to exploit its resources. With Eldoria’s guidance, Liora transformed into a mighty tree, her roots entangling the king’s army and protecting the grove forever. This tale is often told to inspire acts of courage and selflessness.   The Journey of Elowen: Elowen was a healer and a prophet who is said to have received direct visions from Eldoria. Her journey through the wilds, guided by mystical signs and omens, led her to uncover hidden knowledge about medicinal plants and ancient rituals. Elowen’s teachings are preserved in the Sylvan Scrolls and remain a cornerstone of Verdan spiritual practice.

Moral Lessons and Parables

The Fox and the Moon: A popular fable within Verdan mythology tells of a clever fox who wished to possess the beauty of the moon. In its desire, the fox neglects its duties and causes havoc in the forest. Eldoria, observing this, teaches the fox that true beauty lies in fulfilling one's purpose and living in harmony with others. This story is often used to teach humility and the importance of balance in life.   The Owl and the Oak: An ancient oak tree, proud of its strength, belittles a small owl for its modest size and quiet nature. When a storm ravages the forest, the oak is struck down while the owl remains safe in its hollow. The tale highlights the virtues of wisdom, adaptability, and the often-overlooked strengths of humility and quiet resilience.

Mythical Creatures

Sylvan Spirits: Sylvan spirits are elemental beings that inhabit the natural world, each associated with a particular element—earth, water, fire, or air. They are seen as guardians and helpers of Eldoria, aiding in maintaining the balance of nature. Followers of Verdan often leave offerings to these spirits in gratitude or to seek their favor.   Forest Guardians: Mythical creatures like the Stag of the Silver Woods, the Whispering Wind Deer, and the Golden Leaf Phoenix are revered as protectors of the natural world. These beings are believed to appear during times of great need to aid those who respect and protect nature.   The Green Dragon: The Green Dragon is a revered symbol in Verdan mythology, representing the raw, untamed power of nature. Unlike traditional dragons of other mythologies, the Green Dragon is seen as a benevolent force, embodying the fierce yet nurturing aspect of Eldoria. It is believed to dwell deep within ancient forests, emerging to restore balance when nature is threatened.

Apocalyptic Prophecies

The Cleansing Storm: Verdan prophecies speak of a time when humanity's disregard for nature will lead to a great cataclysm—a cleansing storm that will purge the world of corruption and pave the way for a new era of harmony and enlightenment. This belief underpins the urgency of environmental stewardship and the moral imperative to live in accordance with Eldoria’s teachings.

Rituals and Festivals

Eldoria's Awakening: A festival celebrating the arrival of spring and the renewal of life. It involves planting trees, sowing seeds, and various rituals to honor the rebirth of nature. This festival is seen as a time of reflection, growth, and rejuvenation.   Harvest Moon Festival: This autumn festival honors the bounty of the earth and gives thanks to Eldoria for the harvest. Rituals include communal feasts, offerings of the first fruits, and dances under the full moon. It’s a time of gratitude and community bonding.   The Night of Luminaries: A midsummer celebration where followers light lanterns and candles to honor Eldoria’s light and guidance. It symbolizes hope, enlightenment, and the eternal presence of the goddess. This festival includes storytelling, music, and night-time processions.     Sacred Texts and Their Mythological Content   Sylvan Scrolls: The sacred texts of Verdan, the Sylvan Scrolls, are a collection of hymns, prayers, parables, and prophecies. They recount the creation of the world, the deeds of Eldoria, and the lives of revered prophets and heroes. The Scrolls are divided into books, each focusing on different aspects of Verdan spirituality and mythology.   Book of Origins: Details the creation myths, the emergence of Eldoria, and the formation of the natural world.   Book of Heroes: Recounts the legends of key figures like Liora and Elowen, providing moral and spiritual lessons.   Book of Prophecies: Contains apocalyptic visions and teachings on maintaining balance and harmony to avert disaster.   Book of Rituals Describes the rituals, festivals, and practices central to Verdan worship and communal life.     Verdan mythology is a vibrant tapestry that weaves together the sacred teachings of Eldoria, the goddess of nature, with stories of heroism, moral lessons, and a profound respect for the natural world. These myths serve as a guide for the faithful, illustrating the principles of harmony, balance, and reverence for life that are at the heart of the Verdan faith. Through its rich mythology, Verdan imparts timeless wisdom and inspires its followers to live in harmony with nature and each other.

Worship

The primary place of worship for followers of Verdan is the Sylvan Sanctuary, a sacred grove nestled within the heart of Bastia's forests. The Sylvan Sanctuary is a tranquil and serene setting where worshippers gather to commune with nature, offer prayers and offerings to Eldoria, and partake in rituals and ceremonies that celebrate the interconnectedness of all life.   Features of Sylvan Sanctuaries:

Priesthood

The spiritual leaders of Verdan are known as Sylven Keepers, ordained clergy who serve as stewards of nature and guides for the faithful. Sylvan Keepers are deeply attuned to the rhythms of the natural world and act as mediators between the divine and mortal realms. They preside over rituals, ceremonies, and rites of passage, offering guidance, counsel, and spiritual support to their communities.
