Midge the Solemn
Background
Midge’s destiny to become the next Herald of Eventide (the second of The Eternal’s Three Aspects) seemed inevitable from the beginning. Even as a young hedgemouse, there was a certain depth to her bearing, heavy and noticeable as a silent moment in an ancient forest. Exemplars of growth, knowledge and provision, clergy of Eventide are the bridges between youth and dotage. Midge seemed perfect.
Alas, the young hobling was so faraway in her thoughts, so prone to wandering and so in tune with things not-quite-there, that she was eventually dismissed as ineducable by her tutors. She lived a quiet life for a few decades, performing basic tasks as the town required, always in her distant, dreamlike manner.
But things change. Hard times had fallen on Rhosgobel: droughts persisted, patiences thinned and Clannaðs bickered. And so Midge made a sacrifice. She killed the part within her that saw a bit farther and moved a bit slower. She returned to her studies, completing the Trials of Procession with unprecedented speed and eventually taking up the mantle of Herald. For the first time in decades, there is now an auspicious air over the pastures and parklands of Rhosgobel. But there is also much work to do.
