Salinar (SAL-in-are)

Salinar has existed in one form or another for almost 500 years. Something about the area has drawn mages from around the world since just after the War of the Gates. It was not, however, until TY 1116 that Salinar in its present form emerged. This was the year when the First Nine overthrew the dueling magelords who had ruled the area. The First Nine became the first Magisters of Salinar, and the first Archmages of what would come to be known as the Salinar School.

Unlike the magelords who preceded them, each of the First Nine had a specialization, and each was willing to train others in his/her own magical area. The First Nine began to take apprentices, and by TY 1130, the school was established, although the city itself was vastly different from what it is now.

Now, the city-state of Salinar is a walled, circular city. Nine equal towers are spread at precise intervals around the edges of the city, and a single larger tower is at the center of the city. Each of the nine towers houses one of the Magisters, and each is also the training ground for the students of that school. The larger center tower, the Tower of the Magisters, is where the Magisters gather for administration and arbitration. Their meeting place is at the top of the tower, over 1500 feet up. The rest of the tower contains city administrators and bureacrats of various roles; all are specialist mages.

Culture

The nine magic schools have differing standards and differing racial arrangements, but each is considered equal in Salinar. Each school has different methods of training and discipline, so attending any one school will reveal next to nothing about another. The schools each house magical research in that school's specialization, but multi-school spells are researched in the Tower of the Magisters. The easiest school to enter is that of Enchantment magic, with Time magic being notoriously difficult to enter, as it requires the mastery of another school before one is allowed to enter.

The schools are each associated with a colour. Time is Gold, Necromancy is Black, Divination is White, Abjuration is Red, Enchantment is Blue, Illusion is Grey, Evocation is Orange, Transmutation is Yellow, and Conjuration is Green. While studying at a school, the student is expected to wear only clothes of the School's colour. Many wizards continue to wear at least one article with the school's colour once they leave the school.
