Elementics
Elementics is a widely used slang contraction of Elemental Magics, and refers to the manipulation or generation of any of the four standard elements: air, earth, fire, and water. This is the easiest form of magic to master, and requires the least amount of power to produce an observable result; talismans or charms are rarely used to perform these simple spells. The Arcane Academy doesn't even teach this discipline as they require an applicant to demonstrate their proficiency with Elemental Magic as a prerequisite for acceptance. However, just because an enchantment is considered beginner-level, doesn't mean that a skilled and practiced Elemental Wizard cannot defeat an individual who knows more intense conjurations, yet not as well.
Effect
With Elementics, a wizard can generate air, earth, fire, or water, or any combination of the four together, from nothingness. From there, one can cause the element to do anything it is capable of under any circumstances, as long as the laws of physics are maintained. One cannot support the weight of a person on the surface of liquid water, nor will flame coaxed into the shape of a key turn a lock. Nevertheless, even air is not to be laughed at if it has the force of a tornado behind it.
Side/Secondary Effects
If a magician is too distracted, they can literally burn themselves with their own fire. Likewise, if a person were foolish enough to attempt to create their own lake, they would likely be so depleted that they would fall into the pool face first from exhaustion and drown.
Manifestation
There is really only an outward sensation when elements are summoned, and even then it is extremely fleeting. The calling of fire yields a slight flush of warmth, just as the manifestation of water gives a tinge of coolness and a faint negative ionic, fresh scent. Producing earth causes a delicate aroma of humus and ancient stone. Since it is rare to generate air unless one is trapped underwater, its feel is the most difficult to perceive and identify: a whisper of movement against one's skin. Manipulation of elements which are already present in the environment is undetectable.
Source
One's own energy is required to direct the form of the element to be brought forth, but the most convenient thing about Elementics is that a magician can channel magical power stored in the surrounding elements to guide and control the element with which one is working. For instance, to kindle fire in an icy cave, the original impetus must come from the practitioner, but one can draw upon the frozen water and stone for the mystical potential to keep the flame alight.
To control an element, obviously some of it must be present; to conjure it into being, even that is unnecessary.
Mentally envisioning the element suffices. Gestures and rituals are considered sloppy and are discouraged in students.
