The Greater Elven Empire
History
Dress
Clothing in The Empire generally minimizes the amount of exposed skin. The majority of the population wears one of two common garments: the hayi'anah and the bena'anah. These are typically crafted from hemp fabric, but more comfortable and insulating versions are often made using imported cotton or linen. The fabrics are most often dyed green, yellow, or grey for commoners, and nobles favor fabrics of deep blacks and browns. Hayi'anah are clothes meant for working or travelling. The base layer is a shirt and pair of loose, baggy pants. The bottom of the pants are bound tightly around the calf, and may be tucked into boots or shoes. The pants are held in place at the waist by either a tied string or wooden clasp. Over the torso, several layers of long-sleeved ponchos are worn, their number variable depending on the weather, reaching to some point between the waist and the knees. A wide-brimmed hat is often worn to shield one's face from The Bright. Bena'anah are clothes worn for relaxing, socializing, or celebrating. They consist primarily of multiple layers of long robes folded in alternating directions. A loose jacket with long sleeves is worn over the robes, open in the front. The bottom of the robes' skirts reaches to just above the ground. Sandals are worn on usually bare feet, though they are sometimes forgone entirely. For women, the left side of the outermost robe is folded over the right side, and for men, the right side is folded over the left. It's a well-known fact that the elves of the Greater Elven Empire love to accessorize. And they are very, very good at it.
