Wheels of Terror
Winter winds bite at your ankles as you try and navigate the twisting road towards Birohhal. The typical starry sky has been erased with black ink, leaving little light to guide the path and freezing fog folds in on itself making it nearly impossible to see more than ten feet ahead of you. Despite proper winter wear, a long day of travel and lack of rations has left you feeling the cold even more so.
With each step along the road, a misty dark shape creeps into view. Nearly walking into it before figuring out what the mysterious object is. It appears to be a simple cart made of frost dusted wood, abandoned on the side of the road. With the weather getting worse with every minute, you decide it would be wise to take rest in the back carriage and rest until morning.
As you cast a spell of light to allow yourself the ability to see more clearly, you notice something unusual about the cart. The wood at the front of the cart seems to be cracked in an unnatural way. Closer to looking like a disfigured smile than natural splintering. And the pulling bars are not straight as one would think. Instead they resemble twisted roots of a hundred year old tree, moulded into two sharp spikes at the ends. And there seems to be a feint black smoke emanating from the cart itself.
Naturally, you take a step back in caution, only to suddenly grow a face of horror as you begin to realise what this object actually is. A folktale, a story told to scare children. Something that shouldn't be real, and yet. It's glowing red eyes pulse from deep crevices. Sounds of creaking wood and snapping branches echo in the air as it begins to wake up from its slumber. You stand still in horror as it reveals its true form.
The last thing you remember is the screeching of wheels into the frozen dirt and mustering up enough breath to scream for the last time.
As The Legend Goes:
A local legend in the North Western plains of Cytal, the Wheels of Terror tells the tale of an ordinary cart that has been possessed by a dozen demons. Trapped inside the innanimate object by a powerful sorcerer as punishment for terrorizing the village of Myrstone. Despite their weak state, the demons were able to corrupt the vehicle and take total control of the inanimate object. Thus, the Wheel of Terror was created. It now, spends its days luring souls off the main paths to meet their own demise. Partly out of spite, patly to hunt down the sorcerer who banished them in the first place. While many don't believe in the story, there are some who take extra precautions whilst travelling at night. Things such as holy water, fire breathing potions and scrolls of banishment.Master El-Sor speaks of a possessed cart that lures its victims off the road before killing them, sending their souls to hell. I think it is all a little far fetched, but he hasn't been wrong about these kinds of things so far.
