Hunt of the Elder Beast

Long ago, long before the time of you and I, there was a great city home to the wisest, kindest and magical people in all the realm. They farmers prepared the food for all to eat, the blacksmiths clanked away to provide all manner of tools and children played games as children should. All was at peace inside the walls of the great city, it should have stayed this way for all eternity. But nothing lasts forever.   On a night of chilling winds and clouded skies, the people of the great city were woken by something. Something large, something loud, something falling from the skies and crashing down in the nearby forest. The people were confused, they were scared, unsure what it was or why it had happened. So they went out in the darkest of night to find the fallen something and answer their curiosity.   They followed the trail of broken trees and crackling fire until they reached the destination of the something. It was three times the size of any home they ever lived in, covered in fur darker than the coals of a forge. Its teeth looked sharper than any sword made by their hands. And its eyes, opened.   The people of the great city heard screams and cries of the wanderers who went into the forest and panicked. They screamed and cried, rushing to gather their belongings and leave their homes. Gather supplies, find loved ones, grab the children. But it was all pointless, for the something that fell from the sky left the forest and came for them. By the time the morning light shined upon the great city, it was nothing more than ash and rubble, the city was gone. All that remained was a single beaten and broken person, standing in the centre of it all. They were to send a message to the people of Violem. The end is coming.   News spread quickly of the fall of the great city, and the message of the last survivor. They claimed the beast was sent by the The Elders of the Universe to cleanse the lands of failures it had raised. No one was safe from the judgement of the Elders. They were doomed. The countdown had begun. The realm of magic would be destroyed by the Elder Beast. There was nothing they could do. That is what most thought, but not everyone.   There was one brace soul amongst the people, one who did not believe the punishment was fair. They were good people, innocent people. They weren't perfect but they shouldn't have to meet this fate for imperfection. And so, he set out on a journey, a quest. To find the Elder Beast and slay it. For the good of the people, the beings of Violem. He would be the one to save them all. Our hero, Venatur the Hunter.   He walked the lands, for days and nights following the destruction of the Elder Beast. Watching it burn village after village, home after home, nothing seemed to stop it, nothing at all. How could he possibly stop a force of destruction sent by the creators of the universe itself. Venatur was unsure, but he had to try. His tracking and hunting took him weeks of non stop travelling, thinking, planning, preparing for the final battle. But eventually, it paid off as our hero caught up to the beast inside the great forest.   As he stalks his prey, he watches the resting beast slowly inhale and exhale. Taking note at its size of a hundred year old tree. Watched as the black night fur rises and falls with each breath. The teeth dropping from its mouth purer than any bone he had seen. And its eyes, opened.   The Elder Beast quickly turned from a slumber state to aggressive nature heading straight for Venatur. He rolls out of the way, evading the jaws of the snarling beast. Our hero takes the sword in both hands and stands face to face with a monster of cosmic power. He slashes. It bites. He swings. It claws. He hacks. It roars. For hours the two engage in a gruelling, gruesome battle. Dripping blood from every wound, sweat from every pore but neither one admitting defeat. Swirling storms rose above the pair, throwing gusts and lightning at all that came near. And at the eye of it all the Hunter and the Beast fought for the fate of Violem.   Eventually the storms died down, the thick air of tension dissipated and a single soul remained standing in the battlefield. Venatur stood there, panting, bleeding and aching all over but he had done it. He had slain the Elder Beast. Saved the people of this realm from utter destruction, he had saved us all. From that moment on he swore to the sea, the lands and the skies that he would protect the people of Violem for all eternity. To guard all life from the judegement of the Elders and to never let the innocent be dictated by anyone or anything. And that is the story of Venatur, Acuran of Hunting, slayer of the Elder Beast.
