Hex Gold
Your patience has paid off as the guard finally decides to get off her backside and begin her patrol of the bank. Giving you a small window of opportunity to sneak past her office undetected and into the labyrinth of vault doors. While thought of breaking in and stealing all the gold behind these barriers, you are here for one door and one door alone. 'Two Twenty Three, Two Twenty Four, Bingo!'
You take out your skeleton key and cautiously position it inside the lock. Listening to the twisting and turning of metal trigger a series of mechanical systems to unlock the solid brass vault. 'Click' The sounds stop and you softly push the door open, checking up and down the corridor for anybody watching.
Once inside the vault your heart begins to race as you see piles and piles of shiny objects. Goblets, necklaces and entire chests overflowing with gold and silver. Your intel was correct, they really did hide their gold at the bank. Rubbing together your sweaty palms, you set to work looking for an item of interest. grabbing handfuls of coins and tossing them over your shoulder.
Almost without thinking, you stop mid grab and pull your hand away from the gold. For your eyes spot something out of place. A single gold coin glistening ever so slightly brighter than the rest. With a tint of red in its sparkle. You crouch down to get a better look and inspect the coin, noticing the rim of the coin is etched with a combination of runes. 'Crafty sods' you think to yourself stare at the hexed coin before you.
Hex gold is an unpleasant and uncommon form of currency. Hidden in plain sight and often mistaken for regular coins with one key difference. Hex gold have small runes hidden over the surface of the coin which react when touched by a living creature. Affects range from exploding the hand of greedy thieves to making an obnoxiously loud siren to alert others nearby. These false gold coins are a simple but effective trap that can catch even the most cautious bandits. Originally created by the mercenary group Iron Nail. When members grew concerned that their bounty would be stolen by others, they devised several contraptions to protect their ever growing loot. The discovery and awareness of Hex Gold quickly spread across the criminal world of Violem, with several necromancers, pirates and cults crafting their own coins in devious plots and schemes. Most notably, Hex Gold was put in circulation of the villages of Myrstone and Veilstone. Rival villages which both fell economic hardships once they discovered the majority of currency in the area was replaced by Hex Gold. Each village blames the other causing a rivalry which has last for decades.
