Scope
The motivation behind building Vinesia
My motivation for Vinesia is to combine and corroborate a sense of magic with "archaic" technology, and to illustrate how in even a mystically charged setting, the same societal troubles and tests of character are still present - a point I feel is often missed in similar pieces of fiction.
The goal of the project
The world will ultimately serve as a launching point and repository for future campaigns and probing novels.
Vinesia's Unique Selling point
The "selling point" from a background point would be a combination of 1900s-era technology with magic, and having the hybridized advances re-define societies that are nominally used to one or the other - bringing enhancement and exacerbating their existing issues.
Theme
Genre
The general technological level of Vinesia would be the equivalent to the late 19th century/early 20th century technological level. Electricity, steam power, pneumatics, and vehicles are still emergent although being adopted in the greater scope, whereas air travel is still being explored, particularly for use in military applications.
Magic in the Vinesian setting is more or less accepted, though it is not yet commonly available for everyone, either because of expense or because of regulation.
Reader Experience
The world should feel, from the perspective of the audience, as a terrifying awesome wonder - mystical and mythical, with tinges of fear and promises of underlying horror underneath the veneer.
Reader Tone
Vinesia is a darker-set world with motes of brightness here and there. The horror itself lays not within the supernatural, but within the mundane - the same injustices and horrors that plague society today are just as prevalent in Vinesia, despite (or enhanced by) the presence of the ethereal.
Most ordinary people are plagued enough by regular societal or economic woes - the more that one knows, the greater the burden placed on them. Some of those in the highest echelons of power are weighed down by the burden of what potentially catastrophic consequences their actions could bring.
Character Agency
Depending on the viewpoint, most characters will possess little agency to influence the world around them, and instead must focus their strength on solving their own mysteries and surviving.
Very few characters will demonstrate the necessary strength of will to enact the changes they wish to see, and even if said changes are implemented, will rarely persist beyond a generation.
Drama
The Louthian Empire's supporters are making a comeback and seeking to uproot the current balance of the Louthian continent, aiming to reinstate the Empire. To this extent, attacks and demonstrations against the current establishment have taken place, including the assassination of the Mitfield Family's king and crown prince.
