West Gully Disease

Western Centreland Gilliaviri (Giy.Liy.Ah.Var.Iy) Disease, or more commonly known as West Gully Disease, is a fungal-based virus that is most infamous in the realm for causing the Gully Plague; which caused a pandemic in the West and Southern areas of Rumael and West Coast of the Freelands between 1106HE to 1113HE (Human Era). It is the most fatal pandemic recorded, infecting an estimated 4 million and killing 2 million individuals during its overall spread. The origins of the disease are speculated to be first recorded in Broom Village, Centrelands; west of the capital Ameroth. The lax name 'West Gully Disease' became the common term because of a widespread rumor in which kids who contracted one of the earliest cases of the disease are seen frequently playing by the gully around their village.

Symptoms

The disease is droplet-based; meaning the fungal virus can only be transmitted by bodily fluids from an already infected individual.   Symptoms begin to show roughly 40 hours after exposure. The infected individual will begin to show flu-like symptoms with the most unique early signs being slight purplish coloration on the tips of their fingers and toes. As days progress, migraines are more frequent and sudden involuntary twitches occur.   At its peak, infected patients begin suffering a continual spasm of their neck, arms, and legs. Patients are inaudible at this time due to muscle constrictions in their throat, resulting in inconsistent breathing rates. The purplish colouration would reach past the elbow and knees, and the tips of their fingers and toes will blacken. Veins and arteries in these colored portions of the body darken past the initially infected limbs.   This stage of the infection is the most common result of fatality, as victims either suffocate from lack of consistent oxygen, internal bleeding from spasms inflicting blunt harm to the torso, and organ failure if the disease progresses further in the system.   Roughly 80 hours after the peak stage, the virus will begin to subside at a slow rate, allowing the muscles to relax and slowly regain skin pigmentation to their limbs. Prognosis of West Gully Disease assures a 65% Fatality rate, which is higher for the elderly, children, and cold blooded-races such as Draconians and Tortugans. Survivors will have permanent muscle fatigue syndrome, reducing the limits of manual labor.   In some cases, purplish markings remain on limbs after the disease has subsided, but do not indicate the recovered patient as a carrier of West Gully Disease. Deceased individuals show that the pigmentation of the limbs does not subside if the disease has overwhelmed and succumbed the host.

Treatment

Before discovering a cure, doctors and nurses had to find temporary methods to reduce the severity of symptoms during the early stages of the pandemic. Physicians would strap down infected patients on beds using leather straps, in order for the patient to not harm themselves during the peak stage of the disease.   A muzzle was strapped onto the patient's face to reduce further droplet-based infections from happening. The muzzle was fitted with a tube that was connected to a compression bag. To help patients breathe, a nurse would sit beside the patient and continuously pump oxygen into their lungs with the compression bag during the entire duration of the peak stage.   During the duration of the pandemic, expert Alchemists and Doctors worked together to find and distribute a cure for West Gully Disease.   Researchers at the Winter Sister's Clerical Centre - Abbigail Wing were able to find a stable and safe tonic for common consumption. A combination of South Serehardi Root, Lillygum, Quarterleaf Fern Thistles, and Brooke Honey formed a concussion that severely reduced the symptoms, lowering the fatality rate from 65% to 6%.   Colouration will still occur on individuals but will not extend past the fingers and toes. Spasms were stopped completely, however, a sore throat replaced the symptom instead.
