White Plague

The White Plague (or Flemonnis in Arlevon), is a strange illness which only occurred in Veyetræll since after the Invasion.

Transmission & Vectors

It spreads by tainting the blood it comes into contact with.

Causes

Some think that the condition was brought by an infected tribe to Veyetræll, as it only occurred during the Invasion.

Symptoms

The entire bloodstream becomes an opaque white. Gradually, the whole body becomes colorless too, and after many years it affects the hair color. It affects the air intake of the body, so it sometimes feels like the infected is breathing through a straw. At higher altitudes, it can be deadly to have this disease, making people living atop the Skyre Plateau notably vulnerable.

Treatment

The only known treatment is the sap of very rare species of trees, infused in raven's blood. The Ebensap must be administered through the blood, so it "taints" it again. It thus becomes gray and saturates itself back to red, but this process can take several months of rest.   The obtaining of Ebensap was harder before, as it was thought that only Sylgadrig itself could give the necessary sap, but with the propagation of The Living Temple's seeds, it is easier to gather sap from these trees even though they grow very slowly.

Prognosis

Most people survive, but the most vulnerable die from it. Anyone with a respiratory illness is more likely to die, or people living atop mountains or plateau.

Epidemiology

Battlefields are great spreaders of this disease. The disease is the reason the Skyre Plateau has not yet been invaded, as it is so high up that anyone catching it can die from altitude-related complications.

History

Since the Invasion, it has been known to wipe out entire generations of elders, preventing essential oral knowledge from being passed on.   It has been cited by scholars as an essential cause of the invention of widespread writing, a thousand years ago, since knowledge had to be spread in a different manner. This makes the White Plague an important cultural agent.
