Taiyo
An
Elven sub-culture with strong ties to Sun magic and serves as the predominant ethnicity in Kyama.
History
The Taiyo are believed to be descended from the elves that remained loyal to and sided with the
ancient dragons during the Draconic War. When the war ended in the favor of humans and dwarves, the elves were forced to retreat back to their island nation.
Despite their loss of both the mainland and their draconic patrons, the Taiyo managed to recover and build their nation.
Culture
Major language groups and dialects
Kyamese is the main language of the Taiyo or rather, the Taiyo laguage is the main dialect of Kyama.
It is speculated that the modern Kyamese writing system is derived from the system of Old High Imperial pre-dating the war.
Culture and cultural heritage
Taiyo elves are often quite proud of their heritage, particularly their magic. They treat their magic as a surviving connection to the draconic patrons of their ancestors.
Because of this, the rare instances of an elf inheriting weak magical affinity or worse, being born manaless is treated as a mark of shame. Similar to mainland noble houses, affluent Taiyo families will often pass over their eldest child for inheritance should the latter be born with little to no magical ability.
Foods & Cuisine
As a archipelago nation, fish is an easy enough source of food for most communities.
More landlocked areas use chicken for protein with rice being a common commodity for meals.
Funerary and Memorial customs
Cremation is the funeral of choice for Taiyo communities.
Common Myths and Legends
In Taiyo lore, it is said that in the age of the ancient dragons, the dragons patroned the elves and blessed them with their first use of magic. Sun magic was seen as a reflection of the dragons' power itself and lead to the elves being regarded as the first amongst those under the empire.
Yoru are rather villified in legends, particularly during the Draconic War. Stories abound of Night elves being cowards and using their magic to hide and steal instead of helping defend the dragons. These sentiments have carried well into the modern age and colored much of Taiyo views of the Yoru.
Ideals
Gender Ideals
Given the nature of Sun magic, certain disciplines are often attributed to dfferent genders. Techniques involving light and healing are typically seen as more feminine while fire arts are seen in a much more masculine light.
Taiyo society is largely patriarical with men expected to fill the roles of warrior, hunter gatherer, and provider for their household. Meanwhile, women are seen as homemakers and mothers.
