Slimes

Description and Characteristics

The general term slime covers a range of variation including:
  • Sticky Slimes - A semi-solid type of ooze, sticky slimes are far more robust than their cousins. Experienced slime wranglers know never to attack them directly with weapons. The rubbery bodies of sticky slimes can suck a blade out of a wielder’s hands, leaving the attacker unarmed.
  • Caustic Slimes - These pale green oozes have an astringent chemical odor, which mixes with the smell of liquefied flesh from their latest meal. Owing to the slow speed at which they digest their victims, the bones of partially-digested meals can be seen through their transparent exterior. Dissolving remnants move within the slimes in a macabre semblance of motion. This phenomena has earned them the nickname “green puppeteers”
  • Shifting Slimes - A type of large and fluid ooze, shifting slimes have an iridescent hue to them which seems to shift as they move. According to slime-wranglers, they can use magical energy to create an eerie bioluminescence. Shifting slime residue is a highly sought after potent reagent, but it is hard to come by. Despite their size, these slimes are elusive and generally spend their time below ground where visibility is low. They can be quite difficult to locate when they conceal themselves in the subterranean darkness, though these strange creatures are known to leave trails of bioluminescent residue to lure in prey.
  • Animated Slimes - Smaller than their subterranean cousins, animated slimes are significantly more docile and even friendly, particularly with children. While no one has been able to find a cause for these creatures, animated slimes often become pets and guardian. The slimes can also morph into common objects for various use: tables, benches, etc. Some have used them to help furnish the homes of the poor.

Behavior and Intelligence

Caustic, Sticky, and Shifting slimes will attack any creature that moves into their range of sense, which has been documented at 60ft. Slow and stupid, they can be simple to avoid for the wary traveler. Only the animated slimes could be considered domesticated in anyway and for years the others were considered a nuisance to be avoided. In recent years however, the slime-wranglers of Winnowing Reach have found a market for the slimes, or more specifically for their residue.    After discovering some unusual characteristics of the animated slime residue, The Avium sent researchers to collect residue from the other slimes to study. Today, healers, alchemists, and the wizards are finding new and surprising uses for the substance.

Locations in Vestra

Found only within the Humblewood region of Ellebore, no one is exactly sure where or how such creatures came to be. Originally found only withhn the Mokkden caverns near Winnowing Reach, slimes can now occasionally be found oozing out of the charred and burnt trunks of the  Scorched Grove
