Dark elf
Dark elves, also called drow, are a nocturnal type of elf created by Araushnee -- the goddess now known as Llolth. When Araushnee betrayed Corellon and Sehanine, she deceived her followers into believing that she was the one who was betrayed, and they followed her into exile in the Underdark.
In present times, there are two distinct subcultures of dark elves. Those who call themselves drow are the followers of Llolth, who have formed a harsh culture of violence and intrigue in the Underdark. Llolth encourages them to compete viciously amongst themselves so that they may become strong enough to one day conquer Erden.
The others, who prefer to be called "dark elves", have left everything behind to follow Sehanine's light. They live aboveground in mixed elven communities or isolated enclaves. Some lead peaceful lives, while others may return to the Underdark in disguise to plant seeds of rebellion in the Moon Weaver's name.

Gender Ideals
Drow are a strongly matriarchial society. Women hold all the power, while men have to cultivate themselves as combatants or consorts (or both) to gain the attention of powerful women. Even the most talented males will always be treated as second-class citizens in drow society. Meanwhile, women are expected to be ruthless, intelligent, and unquestioningly devoted to Llolth.
Surface dark elves have embraced the gender neutrality of elven society for the most part, but they still favor women for positions of authority. Nearly all of the dark elf Tetrarchs of the Mirovian League have been female, for example, and it's usually the eldest woman in a household who has final say in decision-making.
