Jolt Lizard

Among one of the more 'beloved' creatures of Devkarth, Jolt Lizards are a species of dog sized reptilians that are often found lounging around the deserts of Devkarth. Known also as Jolters, they're often seen as precious pets and are often tamed from birth by nobility. They have a strong sense of community and are generally friendly creatures when in captivity, which makes them a very endearing animal to the Devkarti culture.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Jolt Lizards are generally about the size of a medium sized dog. Their scale colours are actually a contrasting colour from the sands of the desert, ranging from vibrant green to bright teals -- such an adaption is often considered to actually be a 'warning' towards predators. They have three pronounced horns, two perched backwards while the third remains as a spike at their snout.

They have a long and heavy tail ending with three sharp spikes; two forking around the center spike at the very tip. Jolters carry a peculiar set of organs found just around the base of their tail that produces electricity. This electricity can be safely discharged and sent throughout their body to electrocute any would-be predator. Jolters are also capable of discharging the electricity from the tips of their tail as actual sparks of electricity, which only grows in lethality while in the company of other Jolt Lizards. While Jolter tails cannot detach, the fact that they can produce powerful blasts of electricity is generally enough of a deterrent to predators.

Ecology and Habitats

Jolters make their homes around the deserts of Devkarth. They dwell within the wastelands and deserts, and form small packs that work together to bring down the larger prey found throughout the country.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Jolt Lizards are primarily carnivorous, and form packs that work together to bring down larger prey. As a collective, a pack of Jolters are fully capable of producing an electric shock more than powerful enough to bring larger creatures down to their knees, allowing them to stun their victim before assailing them with tooth and claw.

Additional Information

Domestication

Jolters are domesticated as pets very frequently throughout Devkarth. They're generally used by soldiers as hunting or fighting companions, and nobles frequently employ them as both pets and sentinels. Jolters require a lot of affection and generally prefer to have a sense of family, and thus make beloved house pets due to their relatively friendly nature. Neglecting a Jolt Lizard can literally result in death by loneliness.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

They have a very keen sense of smell, though where a Jolt Lizard truly shines is their sight. Their eyes are capable of seeing the subtlest details. This only makes them more popular as guard dogs, as they're often capable of detecting threats from far distances.
Scientific Name
Joltus Iguanidae
Lifespan
20 Years
Conservation Status
Jolt Lizards are generally left alone and ignored; they're very rarely hunted outside of necessity due to the potential danger a full pack can pose to a hunting party. This, combined with their peaceable and sometimes even friendly nature makes them preferred as pets moreso than anything. The Devkarti do not take direct steps in preserving them, per se, but also avoid actively hunting or harming them in any way. They do, however, often hunt for nests to tame into guard dogs.
Average Height
Up to 2 feet tall.
Average Weight
30~50 Pounds
