Minotaur Species in Verridia | World Anvil

Minotaur

Minotaurs are a race of bull-men hailing from the twin islands of Mithas and Kothas in the Blood Sea. They are the chosen of Baphomet, the minotaur god of wrath and vengeance, whose form they emulate. They are at home, both on land and at sea, living in an honor-based society where strength determines power.

Horns and Hooves

Minotaurs are barrel-chested humanoids with heads resembling those of bulls. Their horns range in size from about 1 foot long to great, curling weapons easily three times that length. They often ornament their horns with metal rings or sheathe them in metal to protect them from damage.   Manes of shaggy fur extend down minotaurs’ necks and powerful backs, and males have long tufts of hair on their chins and cheeks. Their legs end in heavy, cloven hooves. Minotaurs are born with long, tufted tails, but some minotaurs of certain clans have their tails docked as part of a coming-of-age ceremony; they find that heavy armor is much more comfortable without a long tail in the way.

Blood and Honor

Minotaurs believe in a brutal code of honor centered on the idea that strength is an instrument of glory and respect. This blood code gives structure to minotaur society, allowing them to resist chaos and enslavement. It is through strength that a minotaur will rise through society to serve in the legions, strength by which a minotaur may lead his clan, strength by which a minotaur may captain a vessel, and strength by which an emperor may rule an empire.

Mariners and Shipwrights

Minotaurs are the some of most accomplished sailors and advanced shipbuilders on Nuvos, rivaled only perhaps by the Ergosian empire. Most minotaurs serve aboard a sailing vessel at some point in their lives. Minotaur vessels can take the pounding of the waves, yet move with speed and elegance.

An Empire Unchained

Throughout history, the minotaurs have been enslaved repeatedly. They have been slaves to dwarves, humans, and ogres. Minotaurs will fight ferociously against anyone who would attempt to enslave them.   The minotaurs have thrown off their shackles, rising up to become conquerors in their own right. The minotaur people believe, as the children of Baphomet, they are destined to one day rule the world. All of Verridia is theirs for the taking, a manifest destiny set down by Baphomet and the ancient emperors.
