Skyraft

Skyrafts form the backbone of Avidian trade on Veron. They're a relatively cheap, simple way to transport goods across long distances.   Skyrafts are frameworks of rope and wooden beams held aloft by balloons filled with hot air or light gasses. They are generally piloted up into the stratosphere, where they can catch heavy air currents that run along major trade routes.   Packages are hung off of the framework by ropes while the vessel is grounded, where they hang until cut free, usually in midair. the packages are equipped with parachutes so the goods aren't damaged.   The craft is capable of landing to collect payment, but more often than not it's unnecessary as most deliveries have been pre-paid or an avid can quickly fly down to collect payment in person and get back to the craft before it blows out of flight range.

Propulsion

Skyrafts only sometimes utilize sails, and nearly never have any powered propulsion. Instead, Skyraft captains have to be experts at navigating the intricate web of air currents above the clouds. Of course, sometimes it's just necessary for the crew to get out and push.

I saw the cover image and thought, wait... really? As I continued I realized how awesome if idea that is. Oof. Love it.   I do wonder how they manage to store cargo. If its just this framework, how do they secure the goods?   So the comment on navigation and understanding wind current is excellent. These things are somewhat predictable and it can easily be used for one's benefit. excellent touch.   This is just cool. I love it.

I mentioned in passing here that the Avids tie packages, probably mostly crates, onto the framework where it just dangles until it's released and drifts to the ground via parachute. Maybe the crates have to be stuffed with padding to cushion the contents? I'll try to clarify the article.   I'm glad you like it!
