Kalamire (KAHL-uh-meer)

Written by UmbralGoat

Kalamire is a large town in Eastern Kovura that rests at the foot of the tail-end of Þumalak's Spine. It's home to one of the major quarries mining for stone, ores and precious gems.

Most of the citizens of Kalamire find work in some facet of the mining process. Magic is used to facilitate the majority of the mining process, but many aid in sorting gems and ores to send off.

Blacksmiths and masons are plentiful in Kalamire itself. Ores are purified and refined; iron and copper are the vast majority of the metals found in the mountain quarry. The masons can purchase stone directly from the mines to forge bricks and other pieces for construction. These are then sent out alongside raw stone purchased by masons in other cities. Of its main exports, though, the majority of Kalamire's wealth is brought in from the gems they mine, mostly sapphire and diamonds.

Like the trade of other items across the oceans, the transport of stone requires special airships; the same kind supplied to trade outposts like Verrez and Taretaglia. These ships are only meant to travel over land, however, and any exports to different continents would require a second trip; and with it would come the risk of losing these valuables to pirates, or sinking into Ve Neþ.

Those who operate the mines are highly respected in Kalamire and receive some of the highest pay of any job due to the danger of using high amounts of magic, much like Electrical Foundrymen of Iþivis and other large cities.

Great article! I love how all different professions have come together in Kalamire because of the quarry. Gives the village life! I wonder though, are only people with professions there, or also families? Do these families own the quarry, or does someone else? What about inns, taverns and travellers, do they stumble upon this village, or it is specifically for trading and mining? Just some things to think about. :)   Keep up the great work! :D
