The Three Deadliest Careers

"It's just a few gobins. What could go wrong?" -Famous Last Words of an Adventurer

Many young children in Veridia aspire to become a glorious adventurer, or a fearsome soldier, or even just a humble merchant or farmer. However, the path to success with these careers is often blocked with difficult and sometimes deadly obstacles. While most farmers don't live every day teetering on the edge of life and death, some career paths tend to tip the scale into "death" more often than others. People die by many things - disease, old age, stabbing, famine, and so on - but sometimes, simply being a certain type of person, one's chances of a premature death increase tenfold. Depending on how one measures "the deadliest career," the answer might be different, but these three occupations tend to be the most hazardous to one's health.    The obvious one is the Adventurer. Adventurers come in all shapes and sizes and skill levels, and many of them tend to either die as idiots or live long enough to retire at 30 with mental health issues. Since there is no established global adventuring guild, there is no kind of insurance or measure of difficulty for certain tasks, and so, many freelance adventurers carelessly venture into the unknown only to realize how outmatched they are when it's too late. Still, many people take up adventuring, either due to desperation or naive wanderlust, because it happens to be one of the most profitable careers. Adventurers have single-handedly caused inflation in the economies of some nations.    Another deadly career is the average town guard. Honestly one of the most respectful positions in Veridia, town guards are the frontline between the major cities of the world and what lies beyond. Though the name is different depending on the city and the nation, the job is fairly consistent. When some invasion or some angry monster or some otherworldly catastrophe encroaches upon a city's walls, the town guards are always the first to go. They willingly lay down their lives to save the citizens, even against unimaginable horrors. Interestingly, when guards do perish, there always seems to be some adventurers involved in some way.   If we consider the deadliest career by the percentage of people who died while having the position, then strangely enough, the deadliest career by far is the Sultan of the Osmad Sultanate, with a remarkable 100% violent death rate. That's right, every single Sultan and Sultana from the beginning of the Sultanate to the present day has died as a result of being killed, either by dangerous creatures, assassins, murderers, poison, and even by members of their own court. This usually happens a few years or even decades into the monarch's reign with an established heir, so their death typically doesn't throw the region into instability, thankfully. Nobody even realizes this strange occurrence until it's pointed out, at which point people go "Huh... That's weird." There is no explanation for this phenomenon, other than some kind of curse that must be causing this.
