Osmad

The Osmad people are a rich, family oriented, and traditional race. Having lived in the same land for over a thousand years, they have developed a unique identity that helps them live in the unforgiving land of the Osmad Desert. The way the dress, act, and the things they believe have all been refined and established over the years.

Culture

Shared customary codes and values

The Osmad people value traditional practices and family ties. It is not uncommon for a family to have over 6 children living in the same house. They are also unlikely to adopt any significant changes in their culture.

Common Dress code

The Osmad people wear lightly colored and baggy outfits to protect them from the sun and the heat. Headscarves are often worn to protect from the environment as well, but are not mandated. The most common colors are reds, beiges, or browns, though the more affluent people wear cooler colors such as light green or blue.

Art & Architecture

Osmad architecture was influenced by the lack of suitable building materials in the desert. Since wood is not very common, most buildings are constructed out of sandstone and clay. Lower class buildings are simple and box-shaped and are often stacked on top of one another. The more intricate buildings stand alone and consist of multiple stories and towers with domed roofs. The main structure usually has a single large metal dome roof. The insides are decorated with many valuable metals and cloth with expensive dyes proportionate with the owner's wealth.

Common Taboos

The Osmad people strong frown upon premarital sex and divorce. Marriage is understood to be for life.

Ideals

Gender Ideals

Though generally not discriminatory between genders, the Osmad people tend to have the men perform more critical jobs such as soldiers, merchants, and farming. Women gravitate towards the smaller tasks such as cooking and caring for the family but many help out or actively do other tasks like farming or fighting. Osmad politics are also not discriminatory, with a Sultan being as equally respected as a Sultana.

Relationship Ideals

A typical Osmad relationship begins with a brief period of getting to know the partner. The pair should eventually declare that they are to be wed within a few weeks. The newly wed couple are then expected to start a family as soon as they are comfortable. Sexual activities outside of wedlock are strongly frowned upon.
