Magus Permit

The documentation to prove magic users in Staros are permitted practitioners and acting with the approval of the governing body. Until the creation of this documentation magic was forbidden within the city limits, and would incur harsh punishment.

Purpose

The Staros Magus Permits allow the city to keep track of registered mages. While this is a relatively new development, Staros has always been wary of magic users to the point that they banned the practice of magic arts within the city walls. Now however, those who apply for a permit and can pass a series of tests and prove their magic is vital to their line of work can practice their specific schools of magic albeit with ever increasing limitations. The most likely to be granted a permit are those who work within the court, the King's royal enchanter or war mages, and their permits extend only so far as their usefulness to the king. This tight control on all magic has lead to many magic users leaving the city, which in truth was part of the original goal of the permits; less mages in the city means less mages to cause incidents in the city. While this has not been enough to stop all illegal uses of magic, it seems to have scared many of the magic users into following the strict rules and regulations for fear of the consequences.

Caveats

The magus permits do not allow mages to practice freely. Instead, they are simply not banned from their practice while they are also legally bound to serve the kingdom should it be required of them. The King may call upon them at any time, and they must answer and provide the assistance needed. Failure to do so can result in the permit being revoked, fines and jail time.
