Nysera Krivaltis

Lady (a.k.a. Baroness)

Lady Nysera Krivaltis is a cunning, ambitious figure who claims the unofficial title of “Baroness” of Nulb. She insists on being addressed as "Honorable Mistress," "Worship," or even "Baroness," despite never being appointed or elected to any legitimate position. Her rise to prominence in the chaotic village of Nulb is marked by ruthless politicking, strategic alliances, and a careful manipulation of both allies and rivals. Nysera's ultimate goal is to secure recognition as the true mayor of Nulb enforced by Iron Talons: The Men of the Baroness leveraging her connections with the Temple of Elemental Evil to further her influence.
“The ‘Baroness’ of Nulb, by her decree and will, destined to reclaim her noble title.”
Physical Description
  • Appearance: Lady Nysera is a tall, imposing woman with alabaster skin, a hallmark of her Suel heritage. Her sleek, jet-black hair falls straight to her waist, framing her face with an air of elegance and precision. Her most striking feature is her emerald green eyes, which gleam with an unsettling intensity, often seeming to pierce through those who dare meet her gaze.
  • Dress: Nysera dresses in finery that blends practicality and ostentation—dark velvets and silk robes accented with emerald brooches and silver embroidery, symbolizing her self-proclaimed authority and ambition.
  • Symbols: Nysera carries a steel raven’s talon pendant, a keepsake of her father’s ruined noble house. This symbol serves as both a reminder of her fall and a herald of her rise.

The Banner of the Black Raven

Symbolism and Purpose
Lady Nysera Krivaltis’s decision to adopt the black raven on a white field as her new banner was both a strategic and symbolic move. This stark departure from the green griffon of House Krivaltis represents her rejection of the past and her focus on carving a new path in the treacherous power struggles of Nulb and the Viscounty of Verbobonc.
Reasons for the Change
  • Breaking from a Stained Legacy: The banner of House Krivaltis, while once a proud emblem, became a mark of shame after her father’s execution for treason. By adopting the raven, Nysera distances herself from her disgraced lineage, signaling a new identity unburdened by past failures.
  • Symbol of Renewal: Ravens are often associated with transformation and resilience. Nysera chose this imagery to reflect her survival and determination to rise from the ashes of her family’s downfall. The white field signifies clarity and a clean slate for her ambitions.
  • Claiming Independence: In Nulb, a village rife with lawlessness and shifting loyalties, the black raven represents Nysera’s autonomy. It declares her status as a ruler in her own right, unaffiliated with the tarnished name of Krivaltis.
  • Raven as a Harbinger: The black raven is also a harbinger of death and power, an omen that instills fear and respect. Nysera uses this to intimidate her rivals in Nulb and to project the image of an unyielding, calculating leader.
  • Practicality in Politics: Among the factions vying for control in Nulb, neutrality and pragmatism are key to survival. The black raven banner is devoid of overt ties to the Viscounty, making it easier for Nysera to form alliances with Temple agents, pirates, and other unsavory characters without arousing suspicion or resistance.
The Symbol’s Role in Nulb
  • Mark of Authority: Nysera’s banner flies over her manor, patrols, and expeditions, serving as a visual declaration of her dominance in the region.
  • Unifying Element: Her followers, from her loyal soldiers to the villagers who respect her strength, rally under the black raven. It is a unifying symbol in a village divided by competing factions.
  • Psychological Warfare: For her enemies, the raven is a reminder of her ruthlessness. It’s a subtle warning to those who challenge her that death and ruin may follow.

The banner also holds a more subtle meaning for Lady Nysera. The black raven is a nod to her secret collaboration with her brother Lakash Quallad and their shared ties to the Temple of Elemental Evil. In the darker rituals of the Temple, ravens are often viewed as messengers of power, manipulation, and prophecy.
A Legacy of Ambition and Redemption
Lady Nysera Krivaltis, the last known scion of House Krivaltis , bears the weight of her family’s tragic downfall and her own determination to reclaim the lost honor of her name. Once a noble daughter of the Verbobonc, Viscounty , Nysera's life has been shaped by the betrayal and ruin that brought her family to infamy.
Background: The Fall of House Krivaltis
Nysera's story begins within the idyllic yet ultimately cursed estate of House Krivaltis, located near the fertile plains west of Mol. Her father, Lord Eldris Krivaltis, succumbed to ambition and desperation, aligning himself with the cult of the Temple of Elemental Evil during its rise in the mid- 560s CY. His treachery, discovered after the cult’s defeat at The Battle of Emridy Meadows in 569 CY, led to his arrest and execution, leaving House Krivaltis dissolved and its lands seized by Viscount Wilfrick Revepaix.   Nysera’s mother, Lady Marietta, passed away shortly after, leaving her children to fend for themselves. Nysera and her brother, Lakash Quallad (who abandoned the family name to align with the Temple), became symbols of the Krivaltis disgrace.
Nysera’s Determination for Redemption
Nysera Krivaltis was stripped of her title and inheritance, becoming a wandering exile. Seeking refuge in the lawless town of Nulb , Nysera aligned herself with the outlaw Sir Torvel Hawkes. While her initial motivations were rooted in survival, her focus shifted to reclaiming her family’s legacy and restoring honor to the Krivaltis name. Unlike her brother, Nysera rejected the Temple of Elemental Evil, viewing its influence as the true cause of her family's ruin. This moral distinction drives her current path, though her methods often place her in morally ambiguous situations.

Ambitions in Nulb

Nysera has become a key figure within the shadowy politics of Nulb, leveraging her charisma, intelligence, and resourcefulness to gain influence. She has begun amassing a network of allies and informants, and rumors suggest she seeks powerful relics tied to the Temple of Elemental Evil—both to counter its influence and to fund her ambitions. Lady Nysera, at the time a young woman of exceptional wit and charm, was branded by association. Stripped of her title and disgraced, she fled Verbobonc under the protection of her family’s former seneschal, Sir Torvel Hawke, a knight and veteran of The Battle of Emridy Meadows. Torvel, unwavering in his loyalty, believed Nysera innocent of her father’s crimes and swore to restore her to prominence. Together, they journeyed to Nulb, where Nysera has established herself as the self-styled “Baroness.”   Nysera is now a cunning player in Nulb’s seedy political landscape. Her goal is to solidify her claim as the town’s mayor, leveraging alliances with the Temple and its agents, including her brother Lakash Quallad , who works within the city of Verbobonc to further their shared ambitions. "Nulb could be more than just a haven for outcasts; it could be a bastion if guided by the right vision."

Personality and Goals

Nysera is ambitious, eloquent, and ruthless. She thrives in chaos, using the disorganization of Nulb to her advantage. While she presents herself as a benevolnt leader to the locals, she harbors no real loyalty to anyone except her brother.
  • Primary Goal: Become the officially recognized mayor of Nulb, legitimizing her rule.
  • Secondary Goal: Secure a barony through her alliances with the Temple of Elemental Evil and her brother's machinations in Verbobonc.
  • Destabilization of Verbobonc: Aid Lakash in destabilizing Verbobonc’s political structure to create a power vacuum that the Temple of Elemental Evil can exploit.

Connections and Allies

Sir Torvel Hawkes
Loyal Knight and Commander of Nysera’s Men
A grizzled, honorable warrior, Sir Torvel Hawke has weathered decades of battle. His weathered face and salt-and-pepper hair speak of experience, but his piercing gray eyes burn with unwavering loyalty to Nysera. He wears a battered set of chainmail, his surcoat emblazoned with the faded heraldry of House Krivaltis.
  • Role: As Nysera’s trusted seneschal and military commander, Torvel oversees her small band of enforcers called Iron Talons: The Men of the Baroness and ensures her safety. His goal is to see Nysera restored to her rightful place in the Viscounty.
  • Personality and Goals: Torvel is pragmatic and fiercely loyal, willing to dirty his hands in service to Nysera. Though neutral in alignment, he adheres to a strict personal code of honor. His ultimate aim is to serve Nysera with integrity and ensure her survival in Nulb’s dangerous web of intrigue.
Connections to House Krivaltis
Nysera embodies the tragedy and potential redemption of House Krivaltis. Her personal quest mirrors the broader themes of the campaign—ambition, betrayal, and the consequences of choices. As the last surviving member of her house (excluding Lakash), she carries the weight of its legacy and a glimmer of hope for its restoration.
Lakash Quallad
Brother and Temple Agent
Nysera’s relationship with her younger brother, Lakash Quallad, is strained at best. Lakash, now a devoted agent of the Temple, views Nysera’s pursuit of redemption as foolish and unattainable. While Nysera sees her brother’s actions as a betrayal of their family’s honor, she cannot deny the potential danger he poses. Their paths are destined to cross again, with consequences that could shape the future of both Nulb and the wider Viscounty.
  • Role: Lakash acts as a liaison between Nysera and the Temple. His ultimate aim is to see his sister rise to power in Nulb while he strengthens the Temple’s influence in the Viscounty.
  • Personality and Goals: Ruthlessly pragmatic, Lakash views his sister’s ambitions as aligned with his own but would not hesitate to betray her if she jeopardized his standing with the Temple.
Conner Bridgeforth TOEE Agent
A political operative and informant in Verbobonc City who acts as Lakash’s agent. Conner provides Nysera with valuable intelligence, ensuring her moves in Nulb align with her brother’s broader strategy.
Temple of Elemental Evil
Nysera collaborates with the cultists of the Temple, offering resources and protection in exchange for their backing. She leverages the Temple's growing power to eliminate rivals and solidify her position in Nulb. Rise to Power: Using her charm and ruthlessness, Nysera built a network of spies, bandits, and smugglers. Her personal forve of men called Iron Talons. With careful manipulation, she eliminated rivals to claim Nulb’s unofficial title of “Baroness.”
"Viscount Wilfrick's withdrawal of the Mounted Borderers is a short-sighted move that endangers us all."

Tactics and Schemes

Nysera is actively working to:
  • Political Manipulation: Nysera plays rivals against each other, ensuring they expend resources and energy while she consolidates power. Strengthen her alliances with Temple agents, including Lakash and Lucius Graeme , to secure the resources needed to control Nulb.
  • Fear and Intimidation: Though she prefers diplomacy, Nysera does not shy away from employing assassins and enforcers to maintain her rule. Build her militia, ensuring loyalty through Torvel’s leadership and Grarg Ironhide ’s enforcement.
  • Strategic Alliances: Her partnership with the Temple of Elemental Evil and her brother allows her to operate with significant resources and influence.
Motivations and Goals
Nysera’s immediate goal is to claim the title of Mayor of Nulb, leveraging her alliances with the Temple and its agents. She dreams of eventually regaining her family’s noble title and reclaiming her ancestral lands near Mol, hoping to one day restore House Krivaltis to prominence. Nysera uses her beauty, wit, and cunning to manipulate allies and eliminate rivals, viewing Nulb’s lawlessness as an opportunity to forge her power base. Neutral Meeting Grounds: Nysera tolerates Captain Tolub's presence in the Boatman’s Tavern but deploys spies to track his dealings with the Temple’s Water Prophet, Belsornig. Profit-Sharing Disputes: There are ongoing power struggles between Nysera and Tolub over control of Nulb’s smuggling profits, with Nysera using her influence to tax his operations indirectly. Manipulation: Nysera has begun sowing seeds of doubt within Tolub’s crew, attempting to lure key figures away from his service and into her ranks.

Adventure Hooks

  • Power Struggle in Nulb: The adventurers are hired by one of Nysera’s rivals (e.g., Dick Rentsch, Tolub, or Lodriss) to disrupt her plans or reveal her Temple affiliations.
  • Mission from the Temple: Hedrack sends the adventurers to assist Nysera in eliminating a troublesome rival, testing their loyalty.
  • A Brother’s Betrayal: Lakash’s ambitions collide with Nysera’s, forcing the adventurers to navigate their sibling rivalry.
  • Exposing the Past: Evidence of House Krivaltis’s past betrayal emerges, risking Nysera’s alliances and ambitions.
  • The Rise of the Baroness: Nysera seeks adventurers to eliminate a rival pirate captain, promising a handsome reward. The mission could embroil the party in the politics of Nulb and the machinations of the Temple.
  • Brotherly Betrayal: Evidence surfaces that Lakash might be planning to betray Nysera. The adventurers are hired to investigate.
  • The Temple’s Influence: Nysera asks the party to retrieve an artifact from the Temple of Elemental Evil, but her true intentions remain unclear.
  • Ambitions of Legitimacy: Nysera aims to transform Nulb into a recognized barony, leveraging trade routes and alliances to gain favor with the Viscount or Temple factions.
  • Control through Chaos: While appearing as a stabilizing force, she fosters rivalries between Nulb’s factions to ensure they remain dependent on her leadership.

Lady Nysera Krivaltis' involvement with Temple operations.

1. Expanded Role in Temple Recruitment Efforts
Lady Nysera’s position in Nulb places her in a unique position to influence and monitor the Temple’s relentless recruitment drive. Given the Temple's constant influx of recruits—nearly 200 low-level recruits and dozens of higher-level operatives each month—Nysera has established a network of informants and recruiters within the village.
  • Recruitment Oversight: Nysera works with Temple agents, ensuring that new recruits are processed through Nulb before being funneled to the Hunting Cabin for transport to the Temple.
  • Brigands and Pirates: She plays a key role in brokering deals with river pirates, including Captain Tolub and Captain Vesrek, to provide steady numbers of recruits.
  • Intermediary Role: Nysera acts as a broker, selecting potential followers for her Iron Talons while passing the less desirable ones to the Temple for sacrificial use or other purposes.
  • Spy Operations: Many of the "recruits" under her watch are secretly spies planted to monitor Temple activity and report directly to her.
2. Connections to the Hunting Cabin Logistics
The Hunting Cabin, as the Temple's primary logistical hub, plays a significant role in Nysera’s plans. The hidden tunnel leading to the Temple allows her to maintain a steady flow of slaves, goods, and covert agents. Nysera leverages this crucial supply line to keep her operations running smoothly while maintaining plausible deniability regarding the Temple's deeper schemes.
  • Control Over Supply Lines: Nysera ensures that critical supplies from Nulb markets flow through the Hunting Cabin efficiently, working discreetly with Gefreid Patris.
  • Influence Over the Tunnel: While Gefreid runs the day-to-day operations, Nysera seeks to undermine his control by placing loyal operatives among the guards.
  • Slave Trade Oversight: Nysera uses the cabin as a staging ground for slaves acquired via Captain Vesrek, working with the Iron Lash to ensure the "best stock" reaches their final destinations.
  • Potential Interference: She views the tunnel as a double-edged sword, leveraging it for influence but wary of Temple reprisals if her control grows too strong.
3. Expanded Relationship with Captain Tolub
Tolub, a high-ranking member of the Cult of the Crushing Wave, has significant influence over Nulb’s waterways. He frequently meets Temple agents at the Boatman’s Tavern and ensures the flow of goods and personnel. Nysera recognizes his importance but views him as a rival for control of Nulb's economic underworld.
  • Neutral Meeting Grounds: Nysera tolerates Tolub’s presence in the Boatman’s Tavern but deploys spies to track his dealings with the Temple’s Water Prophet, Belsornig.
  • Profit-Sharing Disputes: There are ongoing power struggles between Nysera and Tolub over control of Nulb’s smuggling profits, with Nysera using her influence to tax his operations indirectly.
  • Manipulation: Nysera has begun sowing seeds of doubt within Tolub’s crew, attempting to lure key figures away from his service and into her ranks.
4. Expanded Relationship with Captain Marad Vesrek
The Crimson Trader, a mobile slave transport ship run by Captain Vesrek, is crucial to Nulb’s economy. Nysera understands the significance of his operations and seeks to extract the maximum benefit from their partnership while avoiding the scrutiny of the Slave Lords and the Scarlet Brotherhood.
  • Shared Interests: Nysera collaborates with Vesrek to ensure a steady flow of slaves into The Iron Lash, using her influence to negotiate favorable terms.
  • Control Over Distribution: By positioning her men at key unloading points, she indirectly influences how and where Vesrek's slaves are sold within Nulb.
  • Rivalry with Iron Lash: Nysera constantly seeks leverage over Lorveth Thrask, fearing that Vesrek's loyalty to him could undermine her influence.
  • Expansion Plans: Nysera is quietly exploring ways to use Vesrek’s network to expand her influence beyond Nulb and into the broader slave markets.
5. Increased Influence in The Iron Lash
Nysera's relationship with The Iron Lash—a hub for slavery, gladiatorial combat, and illicit pleasures—has become increasingly complex. As captives flow through Nulb via Captain Vesrek, Nysera positions herself as a crucial mediator between buyers and sellers.
  • Selection and Recruitment: Nysera has a vested interest in selecting slaves with particular skills to bolster her militia and intelligence operations.
  • Gladiatorial Spectacle: She secretly sponsors gladiators, using the pits as a proving ground for potential enforcers within her Iron Talons.
  • Political Intrigue: She plays a dangerous game with Lorveth “The Broker” Thrask, sometimes aligning with him against mutual enemies, while other times undermining his authority.
6. Adjusted Influence Over the Boatman’s Tavern and Nulb Market
Nysera’s influence over the Boatman’s Tavern is tenuous, as Captain Tolub and Lodriss hold significant sway over its operations. However, it remains a key location for intelligence gathering and maintaining order within Nulb’s trade networks.
  • Lodriss' Resistance: Lodriss, mistress of the tavern, opposes Nysera’s reach, and the two women have an ongoing power struggle for influence.
  • Smuggler Frustration: Skole, an influential smuggler, continues to be a thorn in Nysera’s side, as he refuses to fall in line with her demands.
  • Espionage and Surveillance: Nysera’s men, disguised as traders and mercenaries, frequent the tavern to eavesdrop on rival factions.
"A town like Nulb needs a firm hand; without it, chaos is the master."

"Strength in Unity, Prosperity in Toil"
The motto of House Krivaltis resonates through Nysera’s actions, reminding players of the values her family once upheld—and the consequences of their betrayal.
Lady Nysera Krivaltis and Her Web
Lady Nysera Krivaltis, aspiring mayor and "Baroness" of Nulb, is deeply entrenched in a complex network of alliances, rivalries, and clandestine dealings. Her ultimate goal of consolidating power in Nulb hinges on careful manipulation of these connections, leveraging her charm, cunning, and ruthlessness to outmaneuver rivals and win favor with allies.
Lakash Quallad
  • Siblings in Conspiracy: Lakash Quallad, her older brother and agent of the Temple of Elemental Evil, shares Nysera’s ambition for power. While he focuses on rising within the political circles of The Council of Lords of Verbobonc, Nysera consolidates control over Nulb.
  • Support and Rivalry: Their collaboration is strategic, with Lakash funneling resources, information, and covert support to Nysera while maintaining his ambitions for influence in Verbobonc. Despite their alignment, their relationship is not without tension, as both are keenly aware of each other’s ambitions.
Sir Torvel Hawkes, Commander of Nysera’s Forces
  • A Loyal Defender: Sir Torvel, her late family’s seneschal, remains unwavering in his support for Lady Nysera, commanding her enforcers with discipline and honor.
  • Disapproval of Lakash: Torvel views Lakash’s alignment with the Temple as dishonorable but remains loyal to Nysera’s vision of regaining her family’s legacy.
The Council of Lords of Verbobonc
  • A Distant Goal: Nysera seeks recognition from the Council of Lords to solidify her claim to power, a title of baroness, and potentially her family’s former lands.
  • Divided Loyalties: Some members of the council are suspicious of her motives, while others see her as a useful pawn in their own schemes.
Boatman’s Tavern and Nulb Market
Lady Nysera’s Iron Talons maintain a precarious relationship with the 4: Boatman’s Tavern and Nulb Market and its influential players:
  • Skole, Ex-Riverman and Smuggler: Viewed as an opportunist, Skole frustrates the Talons’ attempts to control trade. Though Sir Torvel tolerates him, Talons are regularly stationed near the market to monitor his dealings.
  • Lodriss, Mistress of the Tavern: Lodriss, aligned with Captain Tolub of the The Iron Dagger, opposes Nysera’s ambitions. The Talons frequent the tavern to gather intelligence, often clashing with Lodriss’s loyal patrons.
Captain Tolub of the Iron Dagger
Nysera and Tolub, captain of The Iron Dagger maintain a delicate balance of cooperation and suspicion. Marath operates as a powerful force on the Velverdyva River, controlling smuggling operations and supporting the Cult of the Crushing Wave.
  • Strategic Alliance: Nysera maintains a tenuous relationship with Tolub leader of The River Pirates. She uses him to control trade routes but recognizes the threat he poses to her authority.
  • Transactional Alliance: Nysera uses Marath’s influence over the waterways to move supplies discreetly, while Marath benefits from her intelligence and local power.
  • Temple Connections: Tolubs alliance with the Water Temple complicates matters, as Nysera’s ties to the Greater Temple occasionally conflict with his goals.
Slaver Pirate Captain Marad Vesrek
Lady Nysera and Captain Marad Vesrek share a pragmatic alliance, each leveraging the other’s influence to expand their own power base. Marad Vesrek, known as "The Crimson Trader," controls the slaver ship The Crimson Trader and provides Nulb with a steady flow of slaves and contraband. Nysera respects Vesrek's ruthlessness but maintains a cautious distance, recognizing his allegiance to the Slave Lords and his potential ties to the Scarlet Brotherhood.
  • Mutual Interests: Both have vested interests in the slave trade and illicit goods funneling through Nulb.
  • Bribes and Diplomacy: Nysera's men, Nysera’s Drakes, avoid directly interfering with Vesrek’s operations, accepting bribes in exchange for non-interference.
Waterside Hostel of Nulb
Nysera has an uneasy relationship with the 1. Waterside Hostel of Nulb, run by the sly and cautious Dick Rentsch. While the hostel serves as a gathering place for cultists, pirates, and mercenaries, it remains outside of Nysera’s direct influence.
  • Rivalry: Dick Rentsch, owner of the 1. Waterside Hostel of Nulb and an agent of the Earth Temple, is Nysera’s primary rival in Nulb. He sees himself as the rightful leader of the village and openly opposes her rise.
  • Avoidance: Nysera’s Drakes avoid the hostel, knowing it is a stronghold of Temple influence and a den of spies.
  • Occasional Collaboration: Despite their differences, Nysera occasionally uses the hostel for meetings with Temple agents, knowing its reputation for discretion.
  • Power Struggle: Nysera wants to control the flow of information and resources through the hostel but faces resistance from Rentsch, who values his autonomy.
The Iron Lash
Slave Dungeon, Gladiator Pit, and Brothel
23. The Iron Lash: Slave Dungeon, Gladiator Pit, and Brothel, run by the notorious Lorveth “The Broker” Thrask, stands as both a valuable asset and a potential threat to Nysera’s control of Nulb.
  • Transactional Relationship: Nysera collaborates with Lorveth when it serves her interests, particularly regarding the procurement of slaves and the distribution of illicit profits.
  • Political Tensions: Nysera wants tighter control over the Iron Lash’s operations, but Lorveth values his independence and the chaotic nature of Nulb’s economy.
  • Gladiator Pit Influence: Nysera occasionally sponsors fighters in the pit as a show of strength and to maintain influence over key figures within Nulb’s criminal circles.
The Temple of Elemental Evil Leadership
  • Hedrack, Supreme Commander: Nysera has aligned herself with Hedrack, using his network to bolster her rise in Nulb. In return, she provides logistical and covert support to Temple operations.
  • Romag and Belsornig: Nysera carefully navigates the rivalries between the Earth and Water Prophets. While she values Romag’s stability, she also entertains Belsornig’s ambitions, ensuring her influence spans both factions.
  • Fire Temple Connections: Wat, the barman of the 1. Waterside Hostel of Nulb and Fire Temple agent, complicates her dealings with Dick Rentsch, as he subtly undermines her plans.
  • Smigmal Redhand: Nysera’s cautious dealings with Smigmal ensure she has a foothold in the brigand circles without inviting undue Temple scrutiny.
Gefreid Patris at the Hunting Cabin
Nysera is aware of Gefreid Patris’ operations at the 55. Hunting Cabin - off map, which serves as a critical logistical node for the Temple. Though she does not directly control it, she ensures that a steady stream of information reaches her through informants.
  • Intelligence Gathering: Nysera receives updates on the slave shipments and Temple activities through covert agents stationed near the cabin. Updates that include Lareth men commanded by Gattas Void bringing in their supplies and slaves from the Moathouse to the Hunting Cabin to be sent on to the Greater Temple.
  • Potential Disruption: While currently maintaining a passive stance, Nysera is considering ways to leverage this operation to weaken her Temple rivals. The Temples of Air, Water and Fire use this access to their respective Temples on level 2 of the ruins. Romag of the Temple of Earth use his access to the 1st level through Feldrin's tower of Brigands in the upper ruins.
  • Caution: She avoids open confrontation with Gefreid, knowing his loyalty to the Temple and his brutal methods.
