10. Fivver Woodcarver

On the west end of Sheernobb’s bustling trade meadow, nestled between the tranquil Peony Pond and the creaking Peony Mill, stands the quaint wood carving shop known as The Whittler’s Haven. Owned by the meticulous and artistic woodcarver Fivver Timbersnarl and his family, this shop produces some of the most intricate and beautiful carvings in all of Sheernobb. From finely detailed figurines to practical wooden tools and furnishings, the Timbersnarls have become a vital part of the village’s economy and culture.

Description of the Cottage and Shop

The Whittler’s Haven is a modest yet charming cottage with a large, attached workshop. The building is constructed from local oak and elm wood, adorned with carved shutters and a sign that depicts a laughing fox, symbolizing the Timbersnarls’ playful and creative spirit.
  • Workshop: Large windows allow sunlight to flood the workshop, where Fivver and his apprentices can often be seen at work. The scent of freshly carved wood and pine resin fills the air. Tools of all sizes hang neatly on the walls, and partially completed projects line the shelves.
  • Cottage: The living quarters feature a cozy hearth, hand-carved furniture, and walls adorned with Fivver’s artistic works and gifts from satisfied villagers.
  • Yard: A small yard behind the shop boasts a tidy woodpile, a small carving shed, and a training post where the family’s eldest son once practiced archery.

Products and Services

The Whittler’s Haven offers a wide array of handcrafted wooden items, including:
  • Ornamental Carvings: Figurines, plaques, and totems featuring whimsical designs or gnomish lore.
  • Practical Items: Furniture, utensils, and tools for daily use, combining functionality with artistic flair.
  • Toys and Games: Popular with the village’s children, these include carved animals, spinning tops, and puzzle boxes.
  • Custom Commissions: Fivver creates personalized works for villagers and travelers, often embedding hidden meanings or humorous details.

Community Role and Relationships

  • Village Life: The Timbersnarls are well-loved in Sheernobb, not just for their craftsmanship but for their involvement in local festivals and events. Fivver’s carvings often feature prominently in celebrations, from decorative totems to festival trophies.
  • Neighborly Bonds: The Timbersnarls share a close friendship with the millers of Peony Mill, often trading herbal oils for flour and sharing news over a cup of tea.
  • Support for the Guard: Grynn’s position as a ranger ties the family to Sheernobb’s defense efforts. Fivver and Pymra regularly supply the guard with sturdy arrows and salves for injuries.
As you step into The Whittler’s Haven, the scent of fresh wood shavings and pine resin greets you. The sunlight filters through the large windows, casting warm golden hues on shelves lined with carved wonders. Behind a long, well-worn counter stands a stout gnome with a bright smile and sawdust clinging to his apron. His hands are rough but steady, a small knife twirling deftly in his fingers as he finishes the last stroke on a wooden fox figurine. The gnome looks up at you with a twinkle in his eye, his voice warm and inviting.   "Ah! Travelers, welcome, welcome to The Whittler’s Haven! You’re in for a treat if you’re fond of fine craftsmanship and a touch of magic, eh?" He sets the figurine down with care, dusting off his hands as he approaches.   "I’m Fivver Timbersnarl, master carver, maker of wonders, and occasional fixer of broken staves, chairs, and hearts—though the last one’s a bit of a work in progress," he says with a chuckle.   He gestures to the shelves around him, each filled with intricate carvings ranging from animal figurines to elaborate pendants. "Here, you’ll find more than just woodwork. Every piece you see has a bit of my heart in it. And for the discerning adventurer—" he winks, "—a touch of magic as well."   Picking up a small fox totem from the counter, he holds it out to you. "Take this little one, for example. Not just a pretty trinket—it grants you the wit and charm of a fox when you need it most. And over here—" he points to a glowing pine cone resting on a pedestal, "—the Ever-Burning Pine Cone. Perfect for lighting your way without worrying about smoke or embers."   Fivver steps back, hands on his hips, beaming with pride. "Every piece here is crafted with care, whether you need something practical, whimsical, or downright dazzling. So, what catches your eye? Or perhaps you’ve got a special request? If it can be carved, I can make it—and if it can’t, well, I’ll still give it a try!"   He leans in conspiratorially, lowering his voice. "And don’t worry, I keep my prices fair. No tricks here—unless you’re after a tricksy little puzzle box, that is. Those, I have in spades!"
