The father blames the Goblin that live in the Scui Strye (Formerly the Sunken Citadel), and was last seen attempting to raise an army to drive them out. It was explained that they helped, but the father would not listen. The mother worked with the group to get the children away quickly, diverting one of their own caravans to the Sun-Jin at significant financial losses.
The children were infected by the tree, rescued by the group, and have been brought to the Sun-Jin medics to attempt to treat them.
