Amber Hued Silhouette Item in Vasara | World Anvil

Amber Hued Silhouette

Written by World Smithy

A Scene

"Thalok, more light."
At the center of the room there is a large hunk of amber, somewhat shaped like a rough egg. The amber itself is clear enough to see though, save for the golden hue it provides. Trapped within this resinous centerpiece seems to be... a man? Upon closer inspection, that man's visage is horribly twisted into an eternal shout. His blackened, vein-riddled arms are outstretched, as if to snatch at something within the material - never moving. What remains of his clothes betray him to be a Wissian Dim, or used to be, anyway. Where there were once flesh-bound eyes, there are now two burning points of dark purple malice set deep within the sockets; they seem to be tracking the one pacing about the room taking notes.

A goblinoid figure dressed in scholarly attire and a small, lopsided, stovepipe hat hops down from his viewing podium next to the amber and runs towards a dial. Turning it, the arcane spotlight that has been held over the amber increases in its luminosity. The goblin, Thalok, takes a pipe from his coat and begins to prepare some tobacco despite being amidst the numerous, potentially flammable, items in the laboratory.
"Mmm, very interesting. Do you see how its visual receptors are going mad, Thalok?"
Thalok, through a puff of fresh smoke and gritted teeth as he keeps the pipe in his mouth, responds in a coarse and high pitched tone,
"Ye', Arcanis' Harrow, I do. Fink' it wan's you dead, shir... Can we shee wha' it does unda' a shimila' ligh' as our shun?"   (Translation: "Yes, Arcanist Harrow, I do. I think it wants you dead, sir. Can we see what it does under a similar light as our sun?")

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The resinous amber has a fairly simple function: keep the Silhouette from moving. It does so by, of course, acting as a container for the entity. Due to the magical composition of the amber, it is nigh unbreakable by a mere fist, let alone an undead such as a Silhouette.

History

Arcanist Harrow, while on his expedition to the as-of-yet unnamed Aetherwen fourty miles southeast of the Shademarsh, was able to capture one of the Silhouettes that was part of the onslaught on the groups' camps. The individual who was not only unfortunate enough to be turned, but also captured in amber, was once a Dim from Eo' Wissae; meaning, he had failed to live up to the societal expectations of The Wissan Dominion in life. When he may have died and turned is still unknown. His animated corpse is now suspended indefinitely in a chunk of amber in Harrow's laboratory, which is undergoing rigorous testing and examination. Harrow wants to know if light can be weaponized against the Silhouette blight - starting with this unfortunate specimen.

Significance

The Silhouette trapped within the mass of amber will be used to conduct tests on the blight's durability. Harrow wants to test specifically if light is a viable weapon against them, is shone bright enough. Should these tests be successful, it will add another weapon to civilization's toolbox that can be used to eventually reconquer their homeland from The Gloom.
