Asthar (As-tar)

Asthar, the land of tumultuous power struggles and untamed beauty, boasts a landscape as diverse and awe-inspiring as its history. The region is dominated by towering mountains, their majestic peaks reaching towards the heavens and piercing the clouds that loom above. These mountains serve as silent sentinels, their rocky slopes and rugged cliffs standing as testaments to the enduring forces of nature. Nestled amidst the mountainous terrain, thick oak forests blanket the lower slopes, their canopies casting dappled shadows on the forest floor. The trees stand tall and proud, their trunks sturdy and weathered by time, while their branches reach outwards in a verdant embrace. Sunlight filters through the dense foliage, painting the forest floor with patches of warm, golden light that dance playfully among the shadows.   As the land undulates, rolling hills stretch out like gentle waves frozen in time. Covered in a patchwork of vibrant hues, these hills showcase the rich tapestry of Asthar's flora. Blankets of wildflowers carpet the slopes, splashing the landscape with bursts of color—violets, primroses, and daisies intermingling with each other in a riotous display of nature's artistry. The air is filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers, carried on gentle breezes that rustle through the grasses.   Winding rivers meander through the valleys, their crystal-clear waters carving their way through the landscape. These rivers, fed by the melting snow from the mountain peaks, flow with purpose and vitality, their currents rushing and tumbling over smooth stones, creating a symphony of tinkling sounds that harmonize with the natural world. The rivers serve as lifelines, nurturing the land and providing sustenance for the lush vegetation and the creatures that call Asthar home.   Sweeping valleys stretch out in wide, open expanses, their fertile soil a testament to the abundant rainfall that blesses Asthar. The region sees its fair share of rain, with soft droplets falling from the sky like nature's gentle caress, nourishing the land and creating a beautifully lush and green landscape. The valleys are carpeted in emerald green, a vibrant mosaic of grasses and mosses that blankets the earth. In these valleys, wild creatures roam freely, their presence adding to the untamed mystique of Asthar.   The sky above Asthar is a canvas of ever-changing beauty. Towering clouds, like massive brushstrokes, paint the heavens with dramatic strokes of white and gray. They gather and disperse, taking on a life of their own, shaping the atmosphere and sparking the imagination of those who gaze upon them. Sunsets cast a warm glow over the landscape, setting the mountains ablaze with hues of gold and orange, while twilight brings a quiet stillness, the stars emerging to sprinkle the night sky with their twinkling light.   In the colder months, Asthar's weather takes a colder turn, but the lower elevations rarely see snow. Instead, it is the lofty peaks of the mountains that bear the brunt of winter's icy grip, their summits dusted with a pristine white blanket that glistens in the sunlight. The contrast between the snow-capped peaks and the lush valleys below creates a picturesque scene that exemplifies the stark beauty of Asthar.   Asthar's landscape is a symphony of natural wonders, a harmonious blend of mountains, forests, rivers, and valleys. It is a land that inspires awe, where the forces of nature have sculpted a breathtaking tapestry that captivates the hearts and minds of all who venture into its embrace. Within this captivating realm, the story of Asthar unfolds, entwined with the legacy of its rulers and the dreams of its people.

Culture

Culture encompasses the shared beliefs, values, traditions, customs, and behaviors that define a nation and its people. It shapes the way individuals perceive and interpret the world around them, influencing their actions, social interactions, and worldview. In the case of Asthar, a nation deeply rooted in the worship of dragon gods and the reverence for dragons as divine beings, culture permeates every aspect of life. The dragon-centric culture of Asthar is a cornerstone of its society, intertwining with the daily lives and rituals of its people. The dragons, seen as powerful and sacred creatures, serve as sources of inspiration, guidance, and protection. They are regarded as divine beings, capable of influencing natural phenomena and bestowing blessings upon their followers. This reverence for dragons seeps into all aspects of Asthran culture, shaping their religious practices, arts, literature, and even governance.   Religious ceremonies and rituals play a significant role in Asthran culture. Devotees gather at the Dragon Temples, the sacred institutions where the dragon gods are venerated, to offer prayers, make offerings, and seek guidance. These ceremonies serve as a means to communicate with the divine, asking for blessings, protection, and wisdom. The Dragon Priests and Priestesses, chosen for their connection to the dragons, preside over these rituals, acting as intermediaries between the mortal realm and the divine.   Art and literature in Asthar reflect the dragon-centric culture as well. Paintings, sculptures, and tapestries depict magnificent dragons in various forms, capturing their power, grace, and mythical allure. These artistic creations serve as homage to the dragons and are often displayed in temples, palaces, and public spaces. The written word also celebrates the dragons' might and wisdom, with epic tales and legends recounting their mythical feats and teachings. Asthar's poets and bards, inspired by the dragons, compose songs and verses that honor their divine presence.   Asthar's governance and social structure are influenced by its culture as well. The ruling monarch, elected with the guidance of the Dragon Temples, holds a significant responsibility in upholding the balance between the mortal realm and the dragons' influence. The noble families, descendants of the ancient kings and queens, serve as custodians of tradition and play vital roles in advising and supporting the monarch. The concept of merit-based succession underscores the belief that leadership should be earned through personal qualities, rather than solely by birthright, fostering a sense of fairness and equality within the Asthran society.   Asthar's culture also extends to its relationships with neighboring nations. The animosity with Alóm, a grassland populated by humans who despise dragons, underscores the clash of cultural values and beliefs. Conversely, the alliance with Ramal, a coastal desert land inhabited by high elves with unparalleled magical abilities, showcases the embrace of shared spiritual connections and the appreciation for diverse cultures.   In summary, the dragon-centric culture of Asthar shapes the beliefs, practices, and interactions of its people. It influences their perception of the world, the way they worship, create art, govern, and relate to others. Dragons are not merely mythical creatures in Asthar; they are divine beings who guide and inspire the nation's cultural fabric, uniting its people under a shared reverence for these majestic creatures.

History

In the mists of time, when the land now known as Asthar was a patchwork of warring kingdoms, a tapestry of destiny was woven that would forever alter its course. The echoes of clashing swords and the cries of battle were the songs of that age, an age of division and strife. Twelve factions vied for supremacy during the tumultuous War of Ascension, each fueled by its own ambition and the thirst for power.   Amidst this chaos, a beacon of hope emerged: the Asthar Abby. Guided by the teachings of the enigmatic Die Zehn, the Abby was an oasis of faith and unity, attracting followers from across the realms. The Abby's leaders, the wise and revered High Clerics, preached a doctrine of harmony and cooperation, their words resonating with those who longed for an end to the bloodshed.   For sixteen long years, the war raged on, a relentless storm that consumed kingdoms and sundered families. The battlefield was a cruel arbiter of fate, and amidst its horrors, the soldiers who clung to their faith began to notice a subtle transformation. A glint of divine intervention seemed to edge their blades and strengthen their arms, an otherworldly boon that whispered of the gods' favor.   As the war neared its crescendo, the Asthar Abby, its influence now a force to be reckoned with, forged an alliance with a valiant and noble faction. The Abby anointed the leader of this newfound alliance as king, a symbolic gesture that signaled the dawning of a new era. Victorious in their endeavors, the Abby became a cornerstone of the realm, its teachings offering solace to the war-weary populace.   But as the tides of battle shifted, a final gambit was unveiled. The skies above the battlegrounds roared with the wings of dragons, the mythical beasts now ridden by stalwart Dragon Riders. This awe-inspiring sight turned the tide of the war's final year, as the formidable cavalry unit wreaked havoc upon the enemy lines. The world watched in amazement as the sky itself became a theater of war, and the Dragon Riders etched their names into history.   And so, the War of Ascension reached its dramatic conclusion. The Asthar Abby's rise to prominence, the divine enhancements bestowed upon the faithful, and the thunderous arrival of the Dragon Riders all played their part in shaping the course of the realm's destiny. With the unity forged through faith and sacrifice, the land was reborn, transformed into the nation known as Asthar.

Military

The military of Asthar is renowned for its exceptional training and formidable presence on the battlefield. Comprising well-disciplined soldiers and skilled warriors, the armies of Asthar stand as a force to be reckoned with, ready to defend the nation and its people.   The soldiers of Asthar are equipped with a diverse array of weapons, suited to various combat scenarios. Among their front lines, pikes take prominence, providing an effective reach and allowing for coordinated attacks against enemy formations. The soldiers' primary helmet of choice is the Sallet, a distinctive headpiece that offers protection to the head and face while ensuring a clear field of vision. This helmet design not only serves a practical purpose but also symbolizes their allegiance to the nation and the Order of Die Zehn - The Ten.   In terms of body armor, Asthar's soldiers wear a combination of protective layers. Their torsos are covered by a sturdy gambeson, a padded garment with metal plates interwoven between layers of thick cloth. This gambeson extends down to their mid-thigh, providing essential protection for vital organs. To further safeguard their bodies, plate armor is utilized to shield their arms, shoulders, legs, and feet. This combination of protective gear grants the soldiers enhanced defense without compromising their mobility and agility on the battlefield.   In addition to the regular forces, Asthar boasts a contingent of Dragon Riders, an awe-inspiring unit that brings a unique advantage to the battlefield. These Dragon Riders, adorned with a modified version of the Sallet helmet, possess the ability to take to the skies and rain heavy iron darts upon their foes. Protected by Splint mail armor, which combines metal plates with flexible chainmail, the Dragon Riders strike fear into the hearts of their enemies from above, providing invaluable aerial support to the ground troops.   The Dragon Knights the revered holy warriors of Asthar, hold a special place within the military hierarchy. These elite warriors have undergone extensive training, both in martial combat and the ways of their faith. Clad in armor that reflects their divine connection, each Dragon Knight is a formidable force on the battlefield, combining their combat prowess with unique powers granted to them by their chosen Dragon God. They serve as the embodiment of the nation's faith, leading by example and upholding the tenets of their order. These specialized soldiers undergo rigorous training to harness the power of Mana Shards and wield their elongated Caster weapons with precision and deadly efficiency.   Equipped with a satchel filled with Mana Shards, Castere soldiers operating Hand Casters possess the ability to unleash powerful magical projectiles at their enemies. The design of their weapons, which feature a blade at the mouth of the muzzle, allows for close-quarters combat when necessary, ensuring their versatility on the battlefield. Additionally, some Castere soldiers utilize the shoulder rest of their weapons as makeshift clubs, further enhancing their combat repertoire and adaptability in different situations.   For Castere soldiers specializing in the larger and more destructive Caster variants, teamwork and specialized training in teams of three become paramount. The team leader assumes the critical role of providing strategic direction, issuing commands, and coordinating target selection, firing sequences, and reloading procedures. Their keen observational skills aid in spotting potential targets, tracking ammunition expenditure, and ensuring the team's overall efficiency and effectiveness.   The weapons handler, the second member of the team, possesses the necessary skill and expertise to aim and fire the Caster accurately. They are responsible for the precise deployment of the magical projectiles, maximizing the destructive potential of the weapon. Additionally, they hold the authority to release the Mana Shards required for reloading, ensuring a continuous stream of firepower on the battlefield.   Completing the team is the munitions handler, who plays a vital role in maintaining the team's ammunition supply. Although their training level may be slightly lower than that of the other team members, their responsibilities are no less significant. The munitions handler diligently retrieves and tracks the Mana Shard containers used for reloading the Caster, ensuring an adequate supply is maintained. When the need for resupply arises, they communicate this to the team, guaranteeing that the Castere remain well-stocked and prepared for prolonged engagements.   As the number of Castere soldiers continues to grow, their highly specialized training and adaptability make them invaluable assets on the battlefield. Their mastery of Caster weapons, combined with their proficiency in melee combat, ranged spellcasting, and coordinated teamwork, places them at the forefront of Asthar's military might. In the ongoing conflicts within Vår'Verden, the Castere exemplify the cutting edge of warfare, providing Asthar with a significant advantage and further solidifying their reputation as a formidable force to be reckoned with.

According to the mythology, Var'Verden was born from the cosmic union of the primordial forces of light and darkness. From this primordial void emerged the first Dragons, majestic beings who possessed unimaginable power and wisdom. These Dragons embodied the essence of the world itself, representing the elements, forces of nature, and fundamental aspects of existence.   As the Dragons roamed Var'Verden, they shaped the land, breathed life into the waters, and forged the vast tapestry of creation. Each Dragon became associated with specific domains and aspects of existence, reflecting the facets of the world they presided over. Over time, these powerful beings evolved into divine entities, revered as gods and goddesses by the mortal races that emerged.   The Dragon Pantheon, worshipped by the people of Asthar, consists of ten primary deities, each governing a distinct aspect of life and the natural world. This tale serves as a cautionary reminder of the delicate balance that must be maintained between these celestial bodies, as the destruction of one would unleash cataclysmic chaos upon the world.   The mythology and forgotten history of Asthar's religion provide the foundation for the teachings, practices, and values upheld by the followers of the Dragon Pantheon. Worship

In the religion of the Dragon Gods, worship is a deeply personal and individual practice, and the level of faith varies among the faithful. The Order of Die Zehn respects the autonomy of individuals in their spiritual journey and does not impose worship on others. Additionally, the order maintains a stance of non-discrimination towards other religions present in the world.   Within this context, the everyday or regular practices, rituals, and traditions of the faithful are diverse, reflecting the unique paths and preferences of each worshiper. While there is no rigid dogma dictating specific rituals, the religion of the Dragon Gods does offer some general guidelines and commonly observed practices that provide a framework for worship.   1. Prayers and Devotions: Worshipers often engage in personal prayers and devotions to the Dragon Gods. These can be conducted in private or communal settings, depending on individual preference. Prayers may express gratitude, seek guidance, or offer praise to the specific Dragon God or Goddess the worshiper aligns with.   2. These practices help individuals connect with the divine, reflect on the teachings of the Dragon Gods, and find inner peace and spiritual enlightenment.   4. Priesthood

In the nation of Asthar, Dragon Priests are bestowed with a new title in the German language, reflecting their elevated status and role within the religious hierarchy. They are referred to as "Drachenseher," which translates to "Dragon Seers" in English. This title symbolizes their ability to perceive and interpret the divine will of the Dragon Gods, acting as intermediaries between the mortal realm and the realm of the Dragons. The faithful of this religion are guided by a select group of Drachenseher, who are appointed based on their spiritual insight, wisdom, and knowledge of the teachings of the Dragon Gods. The process of appointment involves a combination of divine revelation and recognition by the existing Drachenseher and senior members of the religious order.   When a candidate shows exceptional devotion, insight, and understanding of the Dragon Gods' teachings, the existing Drachenseher and other revered members of the religious order gather to evaluate their suitability for the role. The candidate's knowledge, spiritual experiences, and ability to commune with the divine are assessed through rigorous examinations and trials.   Upon successful completion of these evaluations, the candidate undergoes a sacred initiation ceremony, where they are formally recognized as a Drachenseher. This ceremony includes rituals, prayers, and blessings conducted by the existing Drachenseher and other prominent figures within the religious order.   Once appointed, Drachenseher are distinguished from the rest of the faithful in several ways. They are recognized as spiritual leaders and guides within the religion, responsible for interpreting the teachings of the Dragon Gods and providing guidance to the followers. Their knowledge and insights into the divine realm set them apart as the custodians of the faith, possessing a deep understanding of the intricate tapestry of the Dragon Pantheon's beliefs and mythology.   Drachenseher often hold positions of authority within the religious hierarchy, overseeing the religious practices, rituals, and ceremonies associated with the worship of the Dragon Gods. They play a crucial role in disseminating the teachings of the faith, ensuring the proper interpretation of scriptures, and addressing theological questions raised by the followers.   Their status as Drachenseher is visually distinguished through specific attire. They wear ornate ceremonial robes adorned with symbols and motifs associated with the Dragon Pantheon, signifying their elevated position. These robes often incorporate colors and patterns that represent their chosen Dragon God or Goddess, further emphasizing their connection to the divine.   The Drachenseher's role as spiritual guides and interpreters of the Dragon Gods' will grants them great respect and authority among the faithful. They are seen as conduits of divine wisdom and are sought after for counsel, spiritual guidance, and the resolution of religious disputes. Their presence at important religious ceremonies and festivals adds an air of reverence and sanctity, further distinguishing them from the rest of the flock.   In summary, Drachenseher, or Dragon Seers, serve as the spiritual guides and leaders of the faithful in this religion. They are appointed based on their spiritual insight and knowledge, and their role is distinguished through their authority, attire, and responsibility for interpreting and transmitting the teachings of the Dragon Gods.

Granted Divine Powers

As Drachenseher dedicate themselves to the service of the Dragon Gods, they too experience a transformation, albeit to a lesser degree compared to Dragon Knights. This transformation serves as a visual representation of their divine connection and reinforces their role as intermediaries between the mortal realm and the realm of the Dragons. Rather than having their entire bodies covered in scales, Drachenseher have scaled patches that adorn specific areas of their physique. These patches of hardened scales symbolize their partial embodiment of their chosen Dragon God or Goddess. The scales might be concentrated on their arms, shoulders, or along their spine, depending on the individual and their patron deity.   While the hands of Drachenseher retain their mostly human form, their nails undergo a significant change. Their nails become as strong as talons, allowing them to deliver potent strikes if necessary. These formidable claws serve as a reminder of their divine heritage and their ability to defend themselves and others.   Similar to Dragon Knights, the legs of Drachenseher become digitigrade, granting them increased agility and grace. This transformation allows them to move swiftly and silently, evoking the fluid movements of dragons.   Another notable change that Drachenseher experience is the growth of a tail. The tail serves both as a symbol of their connection to the Dragon Gods and as a practical asset, aiding in balance and offering additional agility. The tail becomes an extension of their being, a physical manifestation of their divine calling.   While Drachenseher do not acquire the draconic maw of their Knight counterparts, their eyes retain the profound intensity associated with dragons. Their eyes might possess a glimmer of otherworldly wisdom or a fiery glow that hints at the divine power that courses through them. Additionally, their horns persist, serving as an unmistakable mark of their divine transformation. Many priests choose to embellish their horns, gilding them or adorning them with decorative elements, showcasing their dedication to their faith and their divine connection.   In terms of attire, Drachenseher have a range of choices. Some priests opt for sheer cloth garments that allow their partially transformed bodies to be more visible. These delicate and ethereal fabrics serve as a visual representation of their divine connection, as they shimmer and flow with a subtle otherworldly energy. On the other hand, the majority of priests prefer humble robes of complementary colors. These robes, while more modest, still reflect the significance of their role and their affiliation with the Dragon Gods.   Overall, the appearance of Drachenseher conveys a balance between their mortal origins and their divine transformation. Their partial embodiment of draconic features, such as scales, horns, and tails, along with the subtle enhancements to their hands and legs, serve as a testament to their sacred duty and their role as conduits of the Dragon Gods' will.   Meanwhile, as a Dragon Knight fully realizes their connection to their chosen Dragon God or Goddess, their physical appearance undergoes a remarkable transformation. The divine essence flowing through their veins manifests outwardly, shaping their body into a reflection of their draconic patron. The most striking change is the transformation of their skin, which is replaced by hardened scales. These scales are imbued with the coloration and patterns associated with their chosen Dragon God or Goddess. For example, a Knight aligned with Majestät, the Rose Quartz Goddess of Love, Beauty, and Passion, may exhibit scales in shades of soft pink or rose, with intricate patterns reminiscent of delicate petals.   In addition to their scaled skin, the hands and feet of a Dragon Knight transform into formidable claws and digitigrade legs, mirroring the powerful appendages of dragons. Their fingers elongate and sharpen into razor-sharp talons, capable of delivering devastating strikes in combat. The Knight's feet take on a more reptilian form, ending in draconic feet equipped with claws that provide enhanced agility and surefootedness.   As the Dragon Knight's visage adapts to their divine connection, their face may undergo a profound metamorphosis. A dragon-like maw may replace their human mouth, complete with sharp fangs that signify their newfound draconic lineage. Horns, varying in size and shape according to their chosen Dragon God or Goddess, may sprout from their forehead, further enhancing their imposing presence.   Some Dragon Knights, depending on their specific alignment and the whims of their divine patron, may experience further transformations. They might grow a tail, coiled and sinuous, capable of striking with force or offering enhanced balance. Others may sprout majestic wings from their backs, allowing them to take to the skies with the grace and power of a true dragon.   Perhaps the most awe-inspiring manifestation of their connection to the Dragon Gods is the acquisition of an elemental breath attack. Similar to the abilities of dragons, Dragon Knights gain the capacity to unleash a potent breath weapon aligned with the element associated with their chosen Dragon God or Goddess. For instance, a Knight aligned with Wolke, the Aventurine God of Spring, Air, Wind, Sky, and Flight, may exhale a fierce gust of wind capable of buffeting foes or aiding in aerial maneuverability.   These physical transformations, along with the elemental breath attack, serve as tangible manifestations of a Dragon Knight's divine empowerment. They not only instill awe and fear in their adversaries but also provide the Knights with the means to protect the innocent, uphold justice, and fulfill their sacred duty as devoted champions of the Dragon Gods.

Their presence in Asthar's political sphere can serve as a deterrent to those who may seek to challenge the nation's stability or undermine its core values.   Moreover, the spiritual guidance provided by the Drachenseher extends beyond individual worshipers. These intermediaries between mortals and dragons offer counsel and insight to political leaders, acting as trusted advisers in matters of governance and decision-making. Their deep understanding of the Dragon Gods' teachings and their ability to interpret divine will make them valuable contributors to the political discourse within Asthar.   The influence of the Dragon Gods' religion is also visible in the nation's laws and policies. The ethical principles derived from the teachings of the Dragon Gods are integrated into the legal framework, ensuring that justice is served and moral values are upheld. The Order of Die Zehn - The Ten, with its reputation for fairness and righteousness, actively advocates for legislation that aligns with the ideals of the Dragon Gods, contributing to the development of a just and harmonious society.   However, it is important to note that the religion's impact on the political fabric of Asthar is not without challenges. Differing interpretations of the Dragon Gods' teachings can lead to internal debates and even conflicts within the Order and among the faithful. These disagreements may occasionally spill over into the political arena, resulting in competing factions and differing approaches to governance.   Nonetheless, overall, the religion of the Dragon Gods plays a significant role in shaping the political fabric of Asthar. It provides a moral compass, unites the people under shared values, and influences decision-making processes. The presence of the Order of Die Zehn - The Ten, with its Dragon Knights and Drachenseher, ensures that the nation's politics are infused with spiritual guidance, emphasizing justice, protection, and the pursuit of righteousness for the betterment of Asthar and its people.

Sects

Indeed, within the religion of the Dragon Gods, the worship of each individual deity can give rise to distinct sects or denominations. These sects are centered around the veneration of a specific Dragon God or Goddess, and they may have their own unique rituals, practices, and traditions that reflect the qualities and teachings of their chosen deity. Each sect operates as a self-contained religious community within the broader framework of the religion as a whole.   In addition to the sects dedicated to specific Dragon Gods, there are also temples that honor the entire pantheon collectively. These temples serve as places of worship where followers can come together to pay homage to all the Dragon Gods and celebrate the overarching principles and themes shared by the pantheon. These pantheon temples provide a space for worshipers to engage in rituals, offer prayers and offerings, and partake in communal gatherings that foster a sense of unity and shared devotion to the entire Dragon Gods' pantheon.   The existence of both sects dedicated to individual Dragon Gods and temples devoted to the pantheon as a whole highlights the diversity and richness of the religion of the Dragon Gods. It allows worshipers to connect with specific deities that resonate with their personal beliefs, values, or chosen professions, while also emphasizing the interconnectedness and interdependence of the entire pantheon. The presence of these sects and pantheon temples contributes to a vibrant religious landscape where individuals can find a spiritual home that aligns with their unique spiritual journey and connection to the Dragon Gods.
