The Phoenix Gates

"Few know that the Pheonix Gates exist, fewer still know where they are. All I know, is that Elves tore open the veil between the Faewild and the Material Plane using these gates. For the explorer that finds them? Well. His name would be legend." ~ Braxon Sov, Grand Enchanter of the Averheim Court   Grand archways of incomparable architecture and beauty said to have brought Elven kind from the Faewild to the realms of humanity. Constructed, some say, by the Old Gods themselves as bridges to realms long forgotten. Others believe the Gates belong to lost civilizations as monuments to deities long dead. A small, fanatical few, believe the Phoenix Gates to be portals to the Hells themselves. Constructs that lie dormant until the Archdevils open the doorways and flood the mortal realms with fire and death to reignite their war with the High Heavens.   Regardless of what the masses believe, the Elves know the truth. Or, at least, part of it. Through significant magical prowess the first of the Jeweled Kings, Teredor Phoenix Tamer and his Archmages broke the veil between the planes to escape the vile corruption of their once beloved realm. Once through they claimed steward ship over this new world, as they had the Faewild. Their kin, the Asa'rae claiming the forests and led by the Mage Queen herself. While the High Elves claimed the plains and the mountains to build their shining cities.   The gates are said to be watched over by ancient guardians constructed by the Elves to ensure that the corruption of their former home does not find its way through these new pathways. Massive avian constructs mirroring the mighty Phoenix itself with shining gold and silver feathers inlaid with brilliant jewels by master Elven jewel crafters. Each individual gem enchanted with spells long forgotten by the other races to breathe a false life into what can only be considered works of the most elegant art.   In Vanigraad's Second Age, the Phoenix Gates have faded into legend for many. Some few Elven scholars remember they exist, though forget their exact location. As their kin were extremely diligent in hiding the Gates from those with no reason to visit them. Any such record of their existence is locked within the Whispering Catacombs of the Naelean's. Though the documentation is incomplete, some volumes even filled with guesswork and assumptions by those who have no preexisting information on the constructs.   Whispers however have begun to creep out of the forests and the Amber plains. Rumors spread by the common folk and the Rangers. Of a sickness that is slowing spreading through the earth. Corruption has set into the crops, animals, and even into the farmers or their families. Blackening veins and turning their eyes a crimson red. To the Elves of Vanigraad, it all sounds too familiar to the stories they were told as children to keep ensure they behaved. The selfsame sickness that blacked the beauty of their ancestral home. An omen that bodes ill for this mortal realm.
