Genasi, Elemental Children of Genies

"The Genasi are a bit of an enigma. They did not exist in Ysandris before the Planar Confluence, but after they became a common sighting. Many can now be found in the exotic trade caravans along the Embersilk Road. Where they are among the most skilled craftsfolk of Vanigraad, second only to the Dwarves" ~ Ingrid Fenalis Fortune Teller of the Wandering City   Although the Planar Confluence sowed chaos and discord on Vanigraad. It brought with it more than bloodthirsty beasts and wild magic. The Genasi are one such additional to the Prime Material Plane. Know as the Elemental Children by many of the other races, they are the offspring of Genies and mortals.   Genasi can be found all across Vanigraad, and are generally well respected for their expert craftsmenship and trade savvy. Despite this, many of their peoples stay within the Embersilk caravans where they hold great sway over the trading Empires there. Due to this lifestyle and the wealth that comes with it, many Genasi families are dressed in elegant, gaudy silks, and shimmering jewels.   When the Genasi appeared in Vanigraad and began integrating themselves within the Embersilk Empires, they introduced a new method of travel along the Road. They tamed huge the elephant-like creatures known as Olephans that are native to the Amberfields. A large stretch of hot savanna in Vanigraad's southern regions. The Genasi trained them to tolerate tents and light structures being built on their backs. These small communities are then interconnected with long rope bridges when the caravans come to a stop and the Olephans bed down.   The Genasi themselves are generally good spirited and fun loving folk. Though with the different elemental types of Genasi all mixing together in one community, conflicts are bound to arise. The Earth Genasi just want peace and quiet when the caravans stop. The Water Genasi love to roam free and explore whatever new lands they find themselves in. Sometimes getting lost in the process, only to stumble their way back home weeks, months, or even years later. The Air Genasi are light hearted and contribute much to the song and performance culture of their peoples. The Fire Genasi serve as the hosts' main form of security and protection. Many of whom are paid well by the Empress of Flame, the current matriarch of the Genasi trading empire. Each Genasi caravan, and even some caravans run by other mortal races, all heed the laws and taxes set forth by the Empress. In exchange, they are protected by her soldiers and are free to roam the Embersilk Road freely. All others passing through the Road must pay a toll dependent on how long they wish to travel along it.   Genasi crafts are some of the most sought after and elegant pieces on Vanigraad. Second only to the weapon forging prowess of the Dwarves, Genasi made products are as expensive as they are elegant. Some say it is due to a unique creation process in which they imbue the elements themselves into to their wares. Others say it is simply because of their Genie ancestry, as the Genie are also adept at the creation of items both wonderful and magical. The Genasi themselves however, remain silent as to their process, and lucky are the few who ever get to see it in person.

Common Etiquette rules

It is tradition that when greeting another Genasi of equal station, a hug, handshake, or verbal greeting will do. If addressing someone of a high station, a deep bow is given. This bow is done by stepping back with your left foot, leaving your right foot extended, but not showing the bottom of your foot. Your right hand will rest over your heart and your left arm will sweep back no higher than your shoulder, but no lower than your waist.

Coming of Age Rites

Genasi age at much the same rate as humans, though are longer lived. Their coming of age ceremony happens on their 17th year, where no matter their element, they undergo the Trial of Affluence. This is a week test in which Genasi children are tasked with finding their crafting discipline and then creating a unique gift to present to the Flame Empress. Should the Empress deem the gift worthy, the child is granted a small sum to supplement the growth of their craft. The family of the children who pass the test are also allowed to have another child should they so wish.
