Wolfkin

The Packs of the Bestial

Origins

The wolfkin have existed since around 1000 BC and it is believed that they are the victims of a witch's curse or a magical ritual. Neither wolfkin nor those of the Sects confirm this belief so it is still simply a theory.   No one is sure if the five Packs were founded from five different curses or the same curse that has taken five different paths. It is more likely the former if it was indeed a curse, however.   It is possible to be a wolfkin not of the five Packs, born from within a small family that became wolfkin through the same unknown means as the five. These families are incredibly rare, however, and usually when found are absorbed into the Packs or eventually just disappear when the wolfkin blood runs thin.

The Packs

While not bearing as ancient of a bloodline as the Vampires or having the advantage of still having some of their eldest around, the Packs have existed for a long time. Each have their own unique backstory for how they came together into what formed into the Packs of today.   Read more about the originators of The Packs.

By Bite or By Blood

There are two main ways to become a wolfkin but these are not the only ways. Though bite and birth are the major method of spreading the blood of the wolf, it is possible to contract lycanthropy by merely ingesting the blood of one.   Being bitten, born, or infected with the blood of the wolfkin does not guarantee that you will become one. Much like Vampires, it is believed that it requires having a bestial spirit which many wolfkin call the Wild or the Howling.   Those who are born wolfkin are born of the Pack, no matter whether they can change or not. Births from two wolfkin parents are generally guaranteed to be wolfkin but those from human and wolfkin have a 50/50 chance of being either. With those born wolfkin, their first transformation is generally not until puberty but others can generally tell when they will change by scent.

Traits

When in human form, wolfkin do retain some of their animal nature. Their senses are heightened, their physical attributes (strength, speed, agility) are slightly increased, and they are capable of healing within hours instead of days. Claws, teeth, fur, and wolf eyes can make appearances while human during times of strong emotion but this is most often seen in the very young or inexperienced. Wolfkin also have a tendency toward more animalistic behavior.   The phases of the moon can also affect a wolfkin's mood in that many are more prone to more intense emotions as well as less control of themselves around the full moon.   While wolfkin are not harmed by silver or wolfsbane as some werewolf lore tells, they are capable of being wounded just like anyone else. If they are injured, the injury carries over between forms. A serious but not mortal wound in Wolfen form, for instance, has a greater possibility of killing the wolfkin if they shift into Bestial or human.   Wolfkin are more resistant to poisons and disease than normal humans but this does not make them immune.

Forms

All wolfkin are able to change at will into whatever form they choose but they are forced to change upon nights of the full moon. During the first years of ones life, the change is forced to be into that of the Wolfen but eventually they can control it to some semblance to be that of the Bestial should they learn it. Between forms, a wolfkin also retains their rational mind (unless their mind has been compromised by insanity, etc).

Human

The normal, everyday form that all wolfkin are born in.

Wolfen

The classic manbeast - the wolf with a humanoid form. This is also the form turned into upon a wolfkin's first change. Bestial is learned after this form but usually only Pack born wolfkin learn it. Bitten and non Pack born tend to only know how to go between Human and Wolfen. Also when in this form wolfkin tend to grow three to seven inches more than their human height.

Bestial

A full wolf form, similar to any in the wild.

Skin of the Beast

The appearance of a wolfkin does not necessarily have to echo the norm for their Pack. There are blond Bliccheces and dark haired Henryks, etc. The color of the eyes in their forms usually does hold with one of the noted colors but this does not necessarily echo the eye color in their Human form.
BLICCHECE
Tend to have red fur with blue or green eyes. In both Wolfen and Beastial forms they have longer legs, giving them an advantage over other wolfkin in speed.
HENRYK
Tend to have blond fur with brown or black eyes. They tend to have more muscle in their Wolfen and Bestial forms, giving them an advantage in fighting strength over other wolfkin.
WARWYCK
Tend to have black or brown fur with maroon, yellow, or amber eyes. In all forms they tend to have a more savage, wild look to them, which comes from them having much more viciousness than other wolfkin. Of all wolfkin, they are the most like the majority of werewolf myths.
MASOUN
Tend to have tawny or brindle fur with red or amber eyes. They tend to have a Husky-like build in both Wolfen and Beastial forms, which lends to their tendency to be capable of greater physical feats of strength than other wolfkin.
MYAGH
Tend to have monochromatic shades of fur with pale blue or gray eyes. In both Wolfen and Beastial forms they have more obviously powerful legs, giving them an advantage over other wolfkin in jumping ability.

Naming Conventions

While wolfkin are very Pack oriented, usually only those born into a Pack use that name as their surname - otherwise they have human surnames. And even those born into the Pack will usually use a human surname to avoid recognition from a freelance hunter or a slayer.

Life in the Pack

The Packs are made up of families of wolfkin, all bonded together by their blood connections and names. Order falls to each family to be kept within themselves and disputes within the families are settled there.   The leaders of the Packs are mainly only in power to settle disputes within the Packs themselves as well as any other problems that may arise.
