The "Twilight Zone"
The years from 2006-2008 were collectively known in the hunter world as the "Twilight Zone".
When the Twilight books first came out there was a rash of incidents involving vampires confiscating and destroying copies when they encountered people reading them due to how strongly vampires felt the books misrepresented them. Agencies were forced to cover up the spike in specific crimes by saying the vampires in question were actually people who objected to the books from a moral standpoint, in order to avoid suspicions about why exactly these books were being targeted. Eventually, due to the fact that many vampires disliked being characterized as the sort who would take moral issue with the books, public destructions of Twilight-related media became a rare and isolated phenomenon.
The Conflict
Prelude
The publication of Stephenie Meyer's first Twilight novel on October 5, 2005 created near-immediate outrage in the vampire community. However, public actions taken against the books/readers only became a widespread issue in the early months of 2006.
Outcome
Vampires who objected to being categorized as conservative or religious fundamentalists by the agencies' cover-up teams eventually stopped harassing Twilight readers, and instances of vampire violence against the series have become few and far between.
Aftermath
Most agencies have an entire filing cabinet dedicated to what have become widely known as 'Twilight incidents', now a broad term referring to the destruction, by vampires, of media they deem misrepresents or demeans them. Any hunters who have actually experienced being on the street or in the offices during the "Twilight Zone" tend to have possibly exaggerated 'war stories' that are often shared with new trainees, and it's difficult to ever be sure if they're the truth. And most tellingly, no one refers to any time of day as 'twilight' any longer. Using the term, rather like calling oneself a 'slayer' instead of a hunter, is a sure sign that someone is new to the job. The term 'sundown' has replaced 'twilight' in all official documentation and in policies and report terminology.
Historical Significance
Legacy
The publication of Midnight Sun in 2020 created a fresh surge of incidents, though not on a level with the original "Twilight Zone". A new 'generation' of vampires who had not experienced the chaos of the first incident created a new, if smaller, rash of destructions and outraged protest.
