Sebastian - Robin
When Robin gets home from a long night, and yet another near-miss, the first thing he finds waiting for him is Jupe the one-eyed dog holding a pigeon in his mouth. Jupe’s been around since before he left the Rowan, and was always bringing him injured animals. It looks like that hasn’t changed.
He gently takes the pigeon, who has one leg and a wing that’s clearly damaged, and caries it inside. He carefully wraps the wing and makes the pigeon a nest in his room. He’s got to keep a close eye on the injured birds. Sometimes they try to fly too soon and hurt themselves all over again. He has a soft spot for all the animals he helps, but the birds often need the most careful attention. There’s a fragility to them that he notices and wants to protect.
It’s only a week later he realizes that ‘Sebastian’ is trying to return the favor.
Robin is used to the nightmares. They’ve been a fact of life since Dad disappeared. He just has more variety in them now. And it is not, as Cody likes to say about his writing endeavors (as he begins two new manuscripts a week at the least and always works on more than one at the same time) the spice of life, not when it comes to nightmares.
He’s woken up by something tapping his cheek. There’s a tug on his hair and he jumps, sitting bolt upright, shuddering but definitely awake now. He turns to see what touched him, assuming it’s the Rowan, but Sebastian is perched on his pillow, watching him with his green-silver head cocked to one side, bright eyes curious.
“Did you…” Robin asks. Sebastian burbles and Robin could swear the bird shrugs.
Robin lays back on his pillow, staring up at the branches interlacing overhead. Sebastian coos and hops over to him, settling down on the pillow.
Robin sighs. “You gotta go back to your nest, buddy. I don’t want to roll over and hurt you."
He sets Sebastian back in his nest on the dresser and rolls over, but no sooner has he done it than he hears a soft thump as the pigeon hops down onto the bed. He listens to the scratch of wings and claws moving up the quilt and then the soft rustle as Sebastian settles himself down beside Robin’s head.
"Okay, fine.” He shakes his head and closes his eyes, unwilling to admit how good it feels to have someone close, someone who will help keep the nightmares at bay. Even if that someone is just a very determined pigeon.
