Magic Sensors

Back before Valyria discovered the beginnings of sigil magic, there was a profession dedicated to telling younger children what magic they possessed. This would usually be done during the school months, and then the kids would be enrolled in classes to teach them how to use their magic safely.
This was seen as an irreplaceable job. If someone didn't know what magic they had, trying to cast a spell outside of their repertoire could result in mishaps at best and an entire town leveled at worst.
Eventually, this profession was brought out of fashion when Atticus Nightshade, a skilled inventor, discovered a sigil that could change to match the user's magic type. This was a lot easier than calling in a sensor, and would soon replace them outright.

Career

Qualifications

Anyone who chose this profession had to have all three of the following:
  • The ability to sense and identify all magic types
  • Knowledge of most, if not all subtypes and conditions that could apply to magic
  • The ability to work with children without any problems

Career Progression

Usually a sensor would begin their career as an apprentice to either another sensor or a doctor of some kind. They would learn the basics, such as the feel of each magic type, as well as the conditions that can affect the various types. After about 5 years of training, they usually strike out on their own and begin to look for work.

Operations

Tools

As it was common to check for any other kind of magic-affecting conditions (such as Whitefire and Raedaru ) when the sensing was performed, most sensors had any standard medical tools necessary to check. If left unchecked, these conditions would lead to struggles later in the child's life.

Ooh, I can imagine how important these people would be to prospective magic users. Have there ever been any accidents where magic-sensing or a lack thereof has gone wrong?
