Great Wall of Fortith
It's been there for as long as almost anyone remembers. There are legends, of course, and some broken, scattered records, and we can also guess what it's for theoretically. However, we can never truly know who built it, or exactly why.-A local barkeep in Aurot. That's according to current public knowledge. The academic sphere is pretty certain, however, of who built it, and exactly why. It's to keep out Hell.
Origin
Best as the old Dwarven records and context clues can tell us, there was a massive war long ago between the necrotic forces of the Hells and absolutely everyone else. Dwarves, Elves, Draconkin, beasts, constructs, angels, and gods (The good ones, anyway) all fought and won against the armies of death and decay. However, this win was not absolute. Where the dead armies expanded their territory, the ground beneath them lost all vitality and was deeply permiated with necrotic energy. Every time our living armies tried to advance, the ground beneath them would sap their vitality until they died, and rose again as a new arm of the dead army. No magic could purify this earth en mass, as would be needed for any serious advancement. It was as though the land itself was becoming a part of the hells. These were days when gods could, supposedly, walk among their followers and fight with them. This likely made most races much more powerful and advanced in the past, though it's hard to tell now. That did not last forever, though. In order to keep the armies of the dead from progressing further, the gods planned to sacrifice themselves for their charges. They constructed a spell that would act as a shield, a bubble, keeping hell's forces and their territory inside for 100 years, contained while a more perminant solution was concocted. The spell was so powerful that it shattered the gods and locked their remnants inside their realms. Only in the last few hundred years have new gods been able to form and start answering prayers again. According the the records, a solution was decided on shortly after this event, which finally brings us to the subject of this article: The Great Wall of Fortith. As it would likely take a very long time to concoct a scalable solution to the necrotic earth, the dominant races at the time (Dwarves, Elves, and a small population of Draconkin) decided to make a wall to reinforce and eventually replace the shield spell. This would be known as the great wall of Fortith.Properties
The wall is approximately 1,500ft tall in most places, easily dwarfing everything else in the region and proving just how advanced the races of the past used to be when they worked together. It's approximately 10,000 miles long, wrapping around the entire Forsaken Realm. It seems to be about ten feet thick in most places, though our callipers keep getting disolved by the wall's magic. The wall is made of the local Gneiss rock, though where the stone was quarried is unclear (the working theory is that it was likely summoned in place from the upper Liminal Realm). It is carved all along it's length and height with vines, gargoyles, faces, glyphs, and other features. These seem to contribute to the massive amount of magic protecting the wall. It is assumed that this magic and carvings continue (and are likely even more complex) on the inner side. Many attempts have been made to cross over the wall, but it seems that the original shield spell that the wall powers and reinforces extends several thousand feet into the air above the wall. There are no gates nor doors in the wall. Passage in and out was clearly never considered an option.Modern Day
The great wall is slowly wearing down. A few holes have appeared along it's length that its magic no longer heals. Luckily, anything that tries to pass through these holes are atomized. We cannot estimate how much longer the wall will last, but we know that when it finally falls, the results will not be good. However, at the current degredation rate, it will likely be a few more thousand years before there's any real concern, and researchers are already looking into ways to repair the wall and shore up our defenses.
