Session 14: The Passage to Dolendai Part IV Report

General Summary

Belsday the 30th day of Harvestide night in the year 3025 AF   Our heroes decided to find a place to camp for the evening and then began to discuss what had happened to them in the library. Iados recalled the vision he had seen when he put in the periapt. The tower in the center of the city showing an elf wearing the same periapt. He also recalled the malevolent force that had pushed him out of the depths of the library. None of them knew why that had happened. They also wondered, why the Githyanki had wanted what was in the vault. Did they want get to Dolendai as well? Leonardo told them that he still felt that he must get to that strange, unknown place. Not only because his uncle had told him, but now because he felt he needed to himself.   Arveer spoke quietly to his friends apologizing for his rash actions. He told them that he would do his best not to repeat what had happened recently, but that he was not sure he would always be able to keep his self control. He made them promise, that if he should fall, that they would all agree to find his sister Sarelia and make sure she is safe. They all told him that they would make sure that nothing would happen to him, but if it did they would all seek out his sister for him. Arveer then praised his friends one at a time. Praising Shayne for turning away form his former life and Leonardo for proving he was far more than just a farm boy. He then told Iados that he valued his friendship and the two vowed to always be there for one another.   Druss had drifted off during the conversation to dig something out of his saddle bags. He returned with cigars in his hand and handed one of them to each of his friends. He told them that they would keep them until they had finished their task and that when they did, they would smoke the cigars and drink Whiskey Gold together to celebrate. Arveer thanked Druss for being a valued member of the Fatebound.   Iados then moved away from the campfire. ut of habit Shayne looked around seeking any threats, but found none and returned his attention back to his friends around the campfire. Iados knelt down and put the periapt around his neck and concentrated on the item to attune himself to the magical item.   Arveer turned toward his friend Shayne and asked him to train him how to me more agile. The drow agreed and they began the long process of training immediately. it would take many more sessions, but if the dragonborn dedicated himself over time it would pay off.   After his training session during his watch, Arveer moved out of earshot from his friends and spoke out loud offering a head-to-head battle between himself and the enemy leader. Either way his friends would be allowed to leave. He did not receive a response. He then said, "Come dawn my blade will taste the blood of a half-orc.   During his watch, Shayne also moved quietly away from the camp and started to look at the tattoos on his arms. He then said, "No more" and began to cut away the marks mutilating his arm and causing himself great pain.   Iados completed his attunement. Using his training in arcana, he reached out into the periapt and once again saw the vision. He was in the body of an elf wearing the periapt. He and six other elves were surrounding an obelisk. They were placing runes into the obelisk simultaneously, but he could not tell in what order. Then the visions ended.   Leonardo stared at the runes during his watch wondering what they could mean and how they would need to use them at the tower. He wandered over to the horse and apologized for the death of his brother. He noticed the bloody bandage on Shayne's arm wondering how that happened. Both Iados and Arveer were sleeping restlessly, possibly having nightmares. Only Druss was sleeping like a rock.   Morsday the 1st day of Colorfall morning in the year 3025 AF   In the morning, Druss began to prepare a Fate Bound Feast while Arveer and Iados went hunting. They were unable to find any fresh game, so the feast was not as nourishing as it could have been. After breaking their fast, Shayne and Arveer continued their training regimine.   When they were ready, they continued their journey toward the tower. A mist hung in the air making it difficult to very clearly into the distance. After a few hours, ruined buildings loomed up in the gloom directly in their path. Bubbling pools of dangerous looking liquid flanked the buildings. They could see that there was something at the top of one of the buildings, but they could not tell what it was. As they moved closer, the object at the top of the tower was a body hanging from noose swaying in the breeze. Arveer moved forward looking very carefully into the mist to try and spot anything or anyone hidden there. Iados helped him by pointing out some of the images he saw in the mists. They could make out shadowy shapes moving there and they warned the others. Shayne cast dancing lights and Druss secured the horse with Iados help.   Shayne directed his dancing lights spell toward some nearby rocks and he could see the outlines of about six creatures there, but he still could not see what they were. Arveer looked over and could tell creatures were hiding there, but he could not tell what they were. Both the dragon born and the drow moved forward to get a closer look. Druss and Iados finished tying up the horses and moved to support their friends.   As they did so, a being emerged from the mist, floating high above the ground. It was wearing a hooded flowing purple robe. He raised his hands to the sky and yelled in a booming voice, "Get over here!" as lightning bolts struck the ground behind the heroes. Iados realized that the being in the purple robes had used Thaumaturgy to create the booming voice.   Druss strode forward toward the shadows in the mist very close to Shayne and then continued forward past him determined to find out what was hiding there. He noticed there were creatures hiding behind the rocks.   The man in flowing robes then yelled out, "YES! Come closer!" as more bolts of lightning struck the ground behind the heroes as if trying to force them to come closer.   Leonardo yelled back shouting, "Who are you?" The man immediately responded saying, "Come closer and I will tell you. You will recognize me." The paladin moved closer scrutinizing the man floating above them. At that moment, the man in the purple robes removed his hood and said, "You may remember me like this." His face them began to change magically and Leonardo did recognize him. He had seen him in Little Ferry it was the major domo of Colwyn Arnbyte! As his face changed back to it's natural gaunt appearance, he shouted, "Do you recognize me fools!?"   Iados his hair tingling from the lightning bolts striking near him, decided to fire a magical firebolt at the major domo. The bolt smashed into him causing minor damage. Shayne followed Druss stealthily into the mist seeking enemies. He surprised a man in scarlet robes wielding a dagger. The drow slit his throat quickly killing him instantly.   Arveer studied the scene and could not see his friend's Shayne or Druss as both had disappeared into the mist. The dragonborn took out his longbow and shot two arrows at the major domo with only one grazing the major domo. Leonardo then hurled a javelin at the villain, but he was too far away and it clanged into a stone nearby.   Tenzin moved forward to get away from the lightning bolts that crashed all around him. As he got closer he could now see that it was a body hanging from a noose swaying in the breeze at the top of the tower. Raising his staff he cast Guiding Bolt at the major domo using a hero point to make sure the spell hit the enemy blasting him with radiant damage setting him aglow.   Cultist then emerged from the mist. The Fatebound had seen them before; the curved daggers, the swirling symbol on their robes and blood smeared upon them, they were clearly worshipers of Thydos. Druss attacked the major domo, but the magical aura around him protected him from good causing all of the warriors attacks to miss wildly.   Then the major domo spoke, "I only wanted to talk with you, but you have decided otherwise. You may have thwarted my efforts in Little Ferry, but you will not stop me here!" With that he cast a spell hurling an eldritch blast that crashed into Tenzin bathing his body in a reddish glow.   Iados then cast crown of madness at the villain, but he resisted the spell yelling out, "Hah fool! You cannot control me with your feeble magic. Come closer and face me!" Shayne continued to move quietly through the mist seeking out new foes. After a few steps he moved out of the mist and was able to sneak up on another cultist enabling him to slit his throat, ending his life with one swipe. Arveer then used his action surge to fire four arrows at the major domo now that is was easier to spot him due to the guiding bolt that Tenzin had hit him with. Still only one of the arrows hit home, causing the villain to laugh mockingly at the dragonborn. Leonardo attacked and also missed. Tenzin then hurled a sacred flame which wreathed their flying enemy in holy fire.   The cultists ignored the attacks of the Fatebound. They all continued to rock back and forth chanting loudly using incomprehensible words. Druss attacked and missed once again the unholy aura deflecting his attacks. At that moment the major domo yelled out "Enough!" and slamming his hands together a loud thunderclap washed over the heroes as they were plunged into total darkness.   The Fatebound were momentarily stunned and disoriented. Slowly their sight returned. They found themselves in a stone chamber lit from above by purplish glowing globes. There was an obelisk in the center of the room covered in runes. In the center of three of the walls were openings filled with a mysterious fog. Green serpent carvings surrounded to of the openings, while the third was surrounded by a carving of a leering, green, demon face. All of the openings were covered by a thick mist that their vision could not penetrate. The fourth wall held an altar with a skull motif and odd looking plaques to either side.

Altar of Skulls
Iados examined the runes on the obelisk with the help of Leonardo while Shayne moved closer to one of the serpent portals. There was a single red eye carved in the keystone of the portal and he began to sway back and forth slightly. Arveer noticed this and tried to avoid looking directly at the eye and tap it with this sword, but missing. Druss moved toward the drow and tried to turn his body away from the eye, but he resisted not willing to take his eyes off of the portal. Tenzin called upon the power of his goddess and asked for guidance to help Shayne touching his friend on the shoulder as he did so. Leonardo told everyone that the symbols on the obelisk looked like the symbols on the runic cubes he had with him. Seeing that his friend was in stress, Leonardo strode over to help and looked straight at the eye. The eye tried to draw the paladin in, but his will was too strong and he slashed his sword at the eye causing no damage.   The tiefling moved up to Shayne and smacked him across the face attempting to break the spell upon his friend. Despite all of their efforts, the drow could not shake the effect of the eye upon him. He tried to squirm free from the iron grip of Druss to no avail. The fighter then yelled out, cover the eye, cover the eye. Arveer stepped up and breathed cold on the eye covering it over in rime. This broke the spell and the drow was himself again.   They all moved toward the center of the room trying to get as far away from the portals as possible. They looked at the altar with the four plaques to see if they could get a clue as to what they might mean. Tenzin cast guidance on himself and with Morwen's guidance he was able to discern that the lower left section held a symbol of Thydos while the images showed the cataclysm that destroyed the Alorian empire. Leonardo moved toward the portal with the demon scupture, but he did not notice anything in particular. Iados recalled that the vision he had was of six people standing together holding runic cubes similar to the ones that the paladin found. He did not think the vision was in this room, but he thought the runes might have something to do with the obelisk.   Shayne took a closer look at the obelisk and he noticed that there were scratches on the floor indicating that the obelisk could spin. After he told his friend about it, Arveer moved forward and spun the stone. It ground slowly around and came to rest. As it did so, two of the runes began to glow and a screeching noise erupted from one of the portals. Emerging from mist was a winged demon with a vultures head. A Vrock had been summoned and moved to attack!   The dragonborn sprang forward, landing two telling blows against the demon. With the last attack he was able to sweep out the legs form under the winged fiend sending him toppling to the ground. As the Fatebound pounced on the fallen creature, it rose up from the ground and let out an ear-splitting screech causing Arveer and Iados to become stunned. Druss stepped up landing two blows on the fiend after Shayne struck a weak spot with this rapier. Leonardo struck the Vrock with a mighty blow using the holy power of Dalana against the fiend. Angered by the attack, the Vrock released viscous spores coating with poison from its chest. The cloud of foul spores slammed into the Fatebound, but they were all able to resist the poison. Shayne and Druss then pounced on the creature slaying it and sending it back to the abyss.   Tenzin suggested that they should all take a look at the altar as he was not able to decipher the meaning of all the stone plaques mounted there. Iados was able to decipher the runes in the upper right hand corner. He translated them as, "Chaos will rule your fate. Face the stone or languish here forever." He also looked closely at the plaque that had been partially destroyed. A message was written there, but some of the words were missing. It read, "Use the stones.....in the sockets.....to eliminate....." Finally he turned his attention to the upper-left hand corner and with the aid of Shayne they noticed that the eyes of the skull there have rectangular slots within the round eyes. Leonardo came over and held up the runic cubes he had and realized that they could fit into the sockets. Tenzin then cast Mending on the broken plaque in the lower right hand corner and they were now able to read the complete message there. It read, "Use the stones in the sockets to eliminate some of the results."   Druss and Leonardo went over to the other snake sculpture portal and covered up the eye there with a sack. They then all looked carefully at all the doors to see if they could spot any runes. They were unable to find any. As they did so, Arveer cut off the Vrock's head as he wanted to take his skull.   Tenzin and Iados looked carefully at the obelisk and noticed that one of the runes on it was glowing. Then then selected that runic cube and put it into one of the eye sockets on the upper left of the altar and they heard a clicking sound. Then then asked the dragonborn to spin the obelisk once again and awaited the results.   The mist that had been filling the portal with the demon head sculpture. They looked through the portal and it looked like a tunnel fading away into the distance. They looked at the obelisk and saw that one of the other runes was glowing. They placed the runic cube that matched the glowing rune on the obelisk into the altar and they decided to spin the obelisk once again.   As the obelisk came to a stop, a noxious gas shot up from the floor and all of the Fatebound began to choke form the fumes. All of the Fatebound were able to resist the effects except for Shayne. Arveer looked at the obelisk and noticed that one of the lightning bolt shaped runes was glowing. Tenzin gave a dose of Keoghtum's ointment healing the drow form the poison. Seeing how deadly the poison was to all of them, they decided to remove the last runic cube they had placed and replace it with the lighting bolt that corresponded to the poison gas.   With that they spun the obelisk again. When it stopped nothing happened and they noticed that one of the runes they had placed in the skull began to glow. They spun the obelisk again and a pile of gold coins fell from the ceiling into the room. Druss picked up a coin and then Arveer scooped up the 71 gold coins and placed them in the Vrock's skull.   They spun the obelisk and this time bolts of lightning crisscrossed the room striking them all for electrical damage. They spotted the rune that was glowing on the obelisk and decided to put the two runic cubes in the altar that corresponded to the poison gas and the electricity. The next two spins landed on the poison gas rune, but since they had inserted the cubes into the altar nothing happened.   The third spin landed on the rune which opened the tunnel in one of the portals. Tenzin then had the idea to pick up a skull from one of the skeletons that littered the room and he then tossed it down the hallway. It disappeared without a sound. Arveer tied a rope to himself and Druss wrapped the other end around himself and held it tightly as he followed ten feet behind. The dragonborn held a torch, but after walking twenty feet into the tunnel, he disappeared and the rope went slack! Druss rushed forward and also disappeared. At the same time, the mist returned in the tunnel leaving the rest of the Fatebound to wonder what happened. Iados tried to move into the mist, but after a few feet he could not move forward.   With nothing else to do, the remaining heroes spun the obelisk again. After another repeat of the poison gas which was stopped by the rune cube. A second spin was greeted with a roar as a cyclops charged into the room and attacked. Shayne cast Faerie Fire on the Cyclops making it easier to hit the creature. Leonardo missed and then Iados struck him with an Eldritch Blast. The cyclops battered the paladin with two pummeling blows.
Cyclops
Cyclops Seventh Voyage of Sinbad by Ray Harryhausen
The drow then landed a sneak attack severely damaging the one-eyed creature. Leonardo moved forward as the creature was reeling and hit him with a powerful sword blow powered by the fury of his righteous deity. Iados touched him with a shocking grasp and then moved away. The cyclops lashed out again and struck the drow and the Paladin with his spiked club. Shayne responded by jumping nimbly up on the monster's knee and drove his rapier through his guts spilling them on the floor. He then jumped away as the creature died at his feet.   Shayne then studied the obelisk and determined that if he spun the obelisk just right he might be able to make it stop at the exact spot again to open up the tunnel that his friends had stepped through. Tenzin cast Lesser Restoration on him to heal his wounded arm. The drow then stepped up and using all of his skill to spin the obelisk and open up the tunnel. Then Iados and Tenzin stepped quickly through. As they did so the portal closed up again. The paladin healed himself and then the drow tried once again to spin the obelisk to get the tunnel result. He failed and a horrible pink creature with warped flesh and tentacles appeared through one of the portals.   Leonardo bravely moved forward to face the terrible creature slashing it with his sword. Shayne spun the obelisk again and another tunnel opened up leading to freedom! The vile chaos creature lashed at the paladin with two of his tentacles, but was unable to land a blow. With that the two remaining heroes ran down the tunnel hoping to find their friends.   They emerged back into the Blighted Waste and as they gained their bearings they realized that they were very close to the tower that they had been trying to reach. They were immediately greeted by their friends Druss and Iados. The fighter explained that they were met by a woman named Aurora. She was a leader of a group known as the Stormlords. They were here to fight the cultists of Thydos and their leader Baratok who is the major domo from Little Ferry. They are also fighting the Green Blades led by the evil Krugark. She warned them that there were a large number of the enemy arrayed against them and she urged them to come with them immediately so that they could surprise the enemy. Arveer wanted to finally face the evil Krugark and he left immediately with Tenzin. Iados and Druss decided to wait for their friends to come through the tunnel.   As lightning filled the sky, they ran forward toward the tower. What met their gaze took their breath away.
The Elven Tower
A furious battle was taking place amid the runes of the tower. The Cult of Thydos was engaged with the Stormlords. They swarmed over each other as the battle raged. Krugark and the Green Blades were also in the ruins adding their strength to Baratok and his minions. Aurora and the Stormlords appeared to have arrived just in time. Hundreds of warriors battled here, the Fatebound needed to find a way to turn the tide of the battle.   Iados came onto the scene and used Thaumaturgy threatening his enemies, but the sound of combat, thunder and lightning drowned out his voice. Even so the ground was shaking from his voice frightening those near him. Tenzin cast Beacon of Hope to aid his allies, but held the final incantation so that he could benefit the maximum number of his friends. Krugark stood on top of the tower overlooking the scene. He jumped closer to Arveer yelling, "the dragonborn is mine!" Aurora and Baratok took turns aiding their minions in the fight, but it seemed that even though they slew many, there were always others there to take their place.   Arveer burst from the tunnel behind Aurora and scanned the battle to find Krugark. When he saw him on the ruined ledge above the fray he screamed out, "We had a deal. I fight you and you let my friends live. You kill me and that is all you need. This is my fight not theirs." The half-orc yelled out, "Bring it on whelp!" as he assumed a fighting stance. With that the dragonborn rushed forward toward his enemy as he looked at Aurora hoping that she could help him reach his nemesis. Shayne dashed into the ruins as he scanned the battlefield for an advantage. Iados shocked a nearby cultist and ran forward to engage another enemy. Leonardo rushed into combat as the Green Blades attacked the Stormlords who moved to protect the Fateound.   Krugark continued to taunt the dragonborn looking to draw him up to the ledge yelling out, "You are not going anywhere. Come up here. It is what I want anyway." Aurora then flew into the air and as she summoned more lightning blasts she yelled to the Fatebound telling them, "You must access the portal. All else will be lost if you do not access the portal." In response Baratok flew into view and pointing at her he yelled, 'Die bitch!" as an eldritch blast lanced from his fingertips and struck her a glancing blow across the shoulder.   The battle continued to rage below. It was now a swirling melee making it hard to even tell friend from foe. Arveer jumped up onto the central staircase bounding up to face Krugark. The monk lashed out with a kick and missed, but he struck twice with a flurry of blows saying, "At last I face you in combat. Your friends will fail. You will fail. I don't care what your sister says." The dragonborn absorbed the blows and responded with, "Your head will soar above these parapets." He then struck out to riposte his strike using a hero point to land a blow on the monk. He followed that up with another hit critically hitting the monk with a broad slash and then he used his second wind to regain his strength.   Druss, hearing the words from Aurora rushed forward to reach the staircase and climb to reach the portal. Tenzin moved forward and released the Beacon of Hope which gave the courage of Morwen to the heroes. Shayne used his disengage ability to move quickly through the melee toward the staircase and the portal. He then cast a Darkness spell on Baratok to limit his vision. Iados unleashed a burning hands and slew two cultists with his magical fire. He then moved toward the staircase. As he did so, the amulet on this chest started to vibrate. Leonardo jumped up and grabbed the edge of the staircase and then climbed up reaching the top quickly where the dragonborn was fighting Krugark. As he did so, he smashed his sword on thi shield to announce his presence. Seeing this, the Green Blades archers directed their fire at him hitting him with an arrow.   Aurora continued to fly high over the battelfield, slaying cultist as she went and calling out, "Get to the portal!" Baratok flew up out of the darkness spell cast by Shayne. The wizard then pointed his finger at Leonardo and a black beam of energy sprang from his hand, but it glanced off the paladins shield hitting the pillar behind him. The Stormlords continued to hold off the Cult of Thydos, but even so one was able to slip through and stab Tenzin.   Krugark attacked with a kick and a punch. The kick missed, and the punch was partially parried by the dragonborn who used another riposte to strike back at the monk hitting him. Krugark then used his Ki power to enable him to jump across to a ruined tower ledge. Arveer took out his bow and Krugark mocked him egging him on to jump over to the ledge and attach him. The two warriors then exchanged words.   Krugark said, "You are going to shoot me with an arrow. Coward!"   Arveer responded, "What does killing a dragonborn not interest you anymore?"   "No, come and get me", said the monk.   "Why was my brother too powerful for you?", responded the dragonborn.   The ork responded, "Obviously not. I was not the one who was whining like a bitch when I was killed."   "I was not the one who was so scared to get killed by his brother that you jumped away to another ledge?", said Arveer   The monk yelled, "I just told you if you wanted to come and fight me. I thought you were athletic?"   Anger filled Arveer's heart as he raced over and jumped across to the ledge. He made the distance easily, standing face-to-face with his foe.   Druss waded through cultists using his sword killing two of them as he continued on his way to the staircase. Tenzin started climbing up the staircase and he was followed by Shayne who missed a cultist in front of him as he moved to the stairs. Iados made it to the top of the platform and he surveyed the battle and cast a fireball to try and kill as many cultist as possible. He sculpted a fireball to attack the Green Blades while attempting to strike Krugark as well. The monk dodged some of the blast taking only half damage. Leonardo approached the obelisk and discovered that there were indentations where he could insert the runic cubes he had. He remembered the vision he had and knew that the had to spell out the word memory. He then yelled out loudly, "Friends! I need you up here. We all need to be here to activate the portal!" He then took out a javelin and threw it at the enemy attacking Shayne, but he missed.    A Green Blades that survived the fireball took aim at Iados and hit him with an arrow. Aurora once again exhorted the heroes to get to the portal. As she yelled this the floor of the platform began to thrum and glow with an eerie light. Baratok saw this and yelled out, "No!" as he flew over toward the portal casting a spell at Iados missing him with a bolt of crackling blue energy. Krugark stood in front of the dragonborn and called upon his own inner strength, taking a deep breath, he  healed himself. As he did so he said, "I have you right where I want you fool."   Arveer heard the throbbing of the platform behind him. Even though he was filled with anger at the half-or standing before him he said, "Rage consumes you, but it will not consume me!" With that he turned away from his enemy and leapt across to the platform with the obelisk. The monk tried to kick him yelling out, "No!", but he missed. As he leapt across, the dragonborn spun his body in mid-air, pulled out his bow and shot an arrow out of him. It would have struck home, but the monk grabbed the arrow from the air and tossed it aside.   Druss witnessing this, took out his bolt of lightning and fired it at Baratok blasting him with electrical energy. He then moved up the stairs toward the portal. Tenzin cast guiding bolt on Baratok bathing him in the light of Morwen searing his flesh as he screamed in agony falling to his death. Shayne used disengage to move away from his foe and jump up the staircase toward the portal. A cultist hit him on the way up, but he made it hanging on a ledge just above a cultist. Iados  thought the word they needed to put into the obelisk was in the common tongue for enemy, but instead it was the elven word for memory which is a seven letter word. He needed all his friends to reach the portal to activate it.   Iados then used his last fireball spell to kill more cultists and help the Stormlords as his friends continue to run toward the portal. Leonardo began to reach into the bag of runes and get the letters to spell the elven word for memory. Aurora suddenly appeared hovering over the body of Baratok. She was yelling to her followers, but all that the heroes could here was "Get away! Get Away!" Suddenly Baratok's body exploded with dark, blackish tentacles and Druss and Tenzin were caught in the blast and they were wracked with pain from the chaotic energy. The remaining cultists grabbed the fighter and cleric trying to pull them off the stairs.    Arveer looked across at the half-orc yelling out, "It's a shame when we don't get what we want.    Krugark responded, "It is certainly not what I wanted. It is what she wanted." He then dropped down below the ledge and then he put his hands to his mouth and yelled out something to his allies that the heroes could not hear. The dragonborn then looked to help his friends and reached down to grab Tenzin and help him up while saying, "This is no place to die." Druss. The drow pulled himself up onto the stairs and he then climbed to the portal. Leonardo told everyone the word was Reflect as he handed them the required runes.    Arveer helped Tenzin up and they both climbed to the top of the platform. Once there he looked below to find Krugark and shot an arrow at him. The monk grabbed the arrow form the air and then turned and threw it back at Arveer missing wildly.   Everyone was not at the top of the platform facing the portal. it was throbbing loudly as they placed their runes one-by-one into the obelisk. As each rune was placed that section of the obelisk spun into place. Cultist where climbing frantically up the steps so Tenzin cast a magical circle to protect them so that they could place all the runes.    A githyanki appeared next to Krugark and spoke with him, but they could not hear what was said. As the last rune was placed the obelisk glowed green and was struck by lightning. They all felt themselves being sucked into the portal. As they did so, the githyanki they saw leapt into the portal with them. The end.
