Steppe Dwarf Species in Vallonde | World Anvil

Steppe Dwarf

A drastic contrast to their hill, mountain, and tunnel dwelling brethren, the Steppe Dwarves seek to conquer the open field. When the Duergar emerged and settled, they became the first Mountain Dwarves, content to plunder the best resources of both the under and overworld. An initially small contingent of these Mountain Dwarves were enamored by the open skies, the vast fields and steppes that could be seen beyond the mountains, stretching as far as the horizon.

These dwarves left the mountains behind entirely, and travelled westward to the Innish Steppes. They adapted and thrived, their natural stoutness allowing them to survive the harsh terrain. They became proficient in animal husbandry, tending their flocks to sustain themselves. They also became among the most adept horse riders of the world, using their mobility to conquer the plains. These Dwarves spent their lives in the sun, unshaded, causing their skin color to shift towards darker tones. Furthermore, they lost their darkvision after generations spent in sunlight, and their stoutness began to reduce, giving way to a lighter, leaner frame. These Steppe Dwarves formed the first traces of Innish culture, becoming powerful Khans, and eventually uniting into the Inniash Khaganate.
