Although Meridian doesn't police these waters in an official capacity, it is policed by them in spirit. There is an old captains saying that goes, "Spare the trouble, go the Meridan", which is often simply expressed as "Go the Meridan". This saying means that a wise captain should always travel the Meridan Sea rather than a riskier, shorter route. The phrase has since become a part of popular culture, with the phrase "Go the Meridan" becoming synonymous with "Choose the safer option".
