The Crag
The Crag is the most secure, and the most remote prison in Vallanna. Considered by most to be both impregnable and escape-proof, The Crag is home to the most dangerous and hardened prisoners in the land.
Situated on a remote island off the northern coast of the kingdom, the fortress is accessible only by ship or magical means. The harsh geography of the island makes approach by ship a daunting task, as the near-vertical sides of the now-extinct volcano that forms the island, mean that only a single safe place to make landfall exists - the tightly controlled Lower Portal - A fortified harbour, guarded by the prison staff.
Access to the prison from the Lower Portal is made by a perilous lift-platform system, which scales the side of the island's rock walls.
The fortress itself is has been built over the entire upper landmass of the small island; which is all that remains of the peak of a long-extinct volcano, now mostly below the waves.
Government
The Crag is overseen by a Warden, who reports to the King himself, back on the mainland. The current Warden is a human, named Hamish Spence, who has been is his post for nearly a decade, following a 20-year career in the Army.
Reporting to the Warden are 60 guards, who perform various duties throughout the prison.
Separate from the Warden and his men, are a small contingent of 5 Overseers from The Arcaneum, who are in residence to monitor those inmates considered to present danger of a magical nature to the rest of the Crag's population, and those who have been incarcerated for magical crimes.
Defences
The main defensive feature of The Crag is it's remoteness. Sitting at least 50 miles from the nearest land, any who would approach are usually easily spotted, and those that would think to swim to escape are unlikely to survive.
The fortress itself sits nearly 2000 feet above the ocean, with a single entranceway from below - The lift-platform system from the Lower Portal docks, at the foot of the island.
In addition to their duties in dealing with inmates possessing of magical abilities, the on-site contingent from The Arcaneum are also vigilant for any signs of magical incursion to the fortress.
