Bottled Sun

Ingredients:

150ml of Slug Mucus
5 Fireflies
3 Mangrove Plankton
60g of Narramil
150ml of Kuhul

Instructions:

Prepare your Fireflies and Mangrove Plankton by grinding them together into a paste with a mortar and pestle   Pour your Slug Mucus and your paste into a standard sized bottle and stir thoroughly. It should begin to take on a golden yellow colour.   Once fully combined, gradually, and very carefully, stir in your Narramil.   Now you will need to begin casting a light form (or light spell if you are a Witch) upon the mixture, in addition to enhancement and mana infusion forms. This increases the intensity of the light produced from the final mixture.   Finally, slowly begin to add your Kuhul to your bottle.* Add the cork to the bottle and shake the potion vigorously. This will then activate the effects of the potion, causing it to begin to glow.   *This last step should only be completed when the potion needs to be used. Add the Kuhul too early and you will be cutting into the duration of the light effects.
**A cheaper version of this potion is available for sale to the commonfolk that does not include the Narramil or Kuhul. Instead, a special paintbrush can be bought that is infused with smaller quantities of the missing ingredients that can then be dipped into the mucilaginous mixture, thereby activating it on the brush and allowing the user to paint the potion on whatever surface they require. The duration of the light effects are shorter when produced this way.

Background:

A more recent discovery, Bottled Sun is a potion that was created as an answer to the Noble and Merchant Quarters' darkness woes. Originally sold at a premium to the rich for their homes and streets, merchants soon saw an opportunity to increase profits by selling a watered-down variant for a lower price to the commonfolk so that they could use it in their homes.   The activating brush was devised by an industrious young woman from a village just outside of the capital who decided to come up with a means to extend how far this weaker potion could go for her and her loved ones. Unfortunately, the merchants soon caught wind of this development and offered a great deal of money to the young woman for her designs. Unable to pass up the life-changing sum, the young woman gave up her invention and the brushes have been sold alongside the cheaper variant of Bottled Sun ever since (for a slightly higher price of course).   Bottled Sun came about after it was decided that it was far too inefficient and expensive to use other fuel sources (as well as nobles believing that wood, coal, and oil street lights were far too common for the likes of them), and a new means of lighting up the streets was needed. Tired of hearing the incessant complaints from the courtiers, the royal family decreed that they would soon begin a competition.   Alchemists, Sorcerers, and inventors from all over Atoom would be challenged to devise a new means of producing light that would be cheap and easy to make, while also being flashy and glamorous enough to appeal to the upper classes. To sweeten the deal, alongside the prestige of creating something for the royal family that would be used throughout The Three Great Powers, the winner would receive a large amount of gold from the crown’s treasury as well as having their family uplifted to nobility. As one would imagine, this drove the populace of Atoom to madness as everyone worked to win the competition and change their lives forever. This also had the unintentional effect of driving the continent into a golden age of discovery and innovation that still lasts to this day as even the wildest inventions and potions saw use elsewhere or inspired the creations of others. Everyone, from courtier to commoner, from pauper to priest submitted an entry to the competition, and all of them were found wanting. All of them, until Lady Edrice Nabil stepped forward with an invention of her own.   The matriarch of the House Nabil, a lesser noble house, Lady Edrice had viewed this competition as a means to rise above her current station and elevate her house. She approached various Sorcerers with offers to fund their projects, many of whom turned her away as they wished to enter the competition themselves, and many more she herself had to turn away as they all expected to be credited for their work. After many weeks of searching, however, she had finally assembled her cadre of desperate alchemists and Sorcerers who were willing to work for a pittance.   The following days were filled with various maladies and mishaps as the team that Lady Edrice had created worked day and night to finish projects that ranged from the useless to the irresponsibly dangerous. The warehouse in which Lady Edrice had housed her team of alchemists was a constant source of noise and explosions, some of which required the intervention of the healers. The city’s guard and its people overlooked much of this kerfuffle, however, as this had become the new normal following the announcement of the competition.   Fearing the loss of their new employment, the alchemy team was determined to meet every one of their employer's strict deadlines, despite all of the setbacks and workplace accidents, as Lady Edrice feared that with each passing day, someone else might steal the prize that she saw as being rightfully hers. Finally, after weeks of constant work and creating, a senior alchemist from the team, now a few fingers lighter, approached the noble matriarch with a new potion that he had just finished brewing.   Enter the Bottled Sun, which the team had found to be easy to make and easy to apply. All one needs to do is combine the activating agent with the potion and then pour that into the lantern and you will have a powerful light for the next 12 hours. Upon seeing the potion in action, Lady Edrice saw the light both literally and figuratively and immediately had Bottled Sun brought before the royal family as her entry into the competition. So impressed were the royals that Lady Edrice was named as the winner of the competition there and then. She received a boost to her family treasury that covered her expenses and then some and was henceforth known as Duchess Edrice Nabil, Master Alchemist and the Bringer of Light.
