Spinner's Gate

The poorest district in Illyria during the days of the Monarchy, Spinnger's Gate was a mixture of criminals, traders, laborers and occasionally those who particularly wished not to be found. The residents were famous, perhaps notorious, for not welcoming outsiders, and the district was the hub for organised crime in the city. At the time, worship of the Theives Deity - Sashiv - was illegal, and Spinner's Gate became the base of most underground worship in the city at that time.

History

Spinner's Gate took its name from the small city gate opened in the wall to facilitate trade in the early days of the city.  The idea was to prevent the vast defensive gates having to be opened and closed everytime trade goods needed to pass through.  Because the main export of the city at the time was textiles, many of the city's weavers and spinners moved to the district around the new gate for better access.  Although the main city gates later began to be left open during the day unless there is a threat to the inhabitants, and so the small gate fell out of popular use, the easy access to the roads outside without having to pass through a heavily watched fortification led to the district becoming first a smuggling hotspot, then more generally a base for organised crime.
