Ring of Volcabulary

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The magical method by which the ring works is not fully understood, however, it is possible that the current holder, Lenora, is not in fact truly the current owner of it, or at least not it's controller.  This appears to be the case on the grounds that Zemidriath, the prior holder, appears to have control over the result of each usage of the ring, and in fact over whether it works at all.  It appears therefore that the 'controller' of the ring has some kind of magical control over what exactly the ring does when it is used.

History

This ring has been in the hoard of Zamascryon for several centuries, and it's original creator or previous owners are unknown. However, around fifty years ago it was stolen by Zemidriath, Zamascryon's half-brother, as part of the general practice of dragons to steal from one another if their hoards are at all similar.   The new owner kept it for several decades, more as a show of superior cunning over his brother than for any great love of the item itself, and has recently given it as a gift to Lenora, a half-elf whose blunt and direct method of conversation amused him.

Significance

The ring is capable of twisting any spell cast by the wearer to whom it is attuned - excluding those cast from scrolls - by one letter of the spells name, according to the will of the wearer.  For example, the current owner freuquently uses the cantrip 'Mending' as 'Sending', which results in the transmission of a message.  The results vary, though they always match the word chosen.  However, without the ability to add any nuance, it can be unpredictable: for example 'bind traps' as a replacement for 'find traps' may 'bind' them in place, rendering them inactive, or it may 'bind' them to the caster, causing them all to trigger targeting that person immediately.
