Levana's temple

Here, you will worship me. Your Queen, your goddess. You will obey me and serve my wishes. If you are good and obedient, one day you will join me in my powers.
— Queen Levana

The Temple

by Raph Howald
Queen Levana, a powerful mage who ruled Valabrad for ten years, ordered to build a temple in her honor. The public purpose of the temple was to worship her. The hiding goal was to recruit and grow a network of loyal followers that obeyed every wish and command from the Queen.

The temple, for many years harbored hundreds of followers who practiced rituals, celebrated parties, and plotted against the Queen's enemies.

Architecture

The building was a mix of stone, marble, and organic life. The Queen herself supervised the construction. Many details were finished thanks to her magic powers, and her connection with nature.

The temple had a big entrance with monumental stairs and one statue of the Queen. Then an atrium full of paintings and more sculptures of Levana. There her followers performed individual rites in her honor. The nave was dedicated to the collective rituals, also had an altar reserved for the ultimate ceremony of receiving the powers from the Queen.

Behind the altar were three smaller rooms where the queen could meet with her worshippers individually if she desired to prove their loyalty in a more private venue.

When the two close advisors, after receiving magic powers from the Queen, betrayed her and killed her, the kingdom descended into chaos. A Big War between the mages devastated the nation, and ultimately all mages were either killed or went into hiding. After the humans regained control of the government, one of their first decisions was to destroy all traces of magic and whatever it was associated with the late queen and all mages.

The temple was looted, burned, and left in ruins. Every last piece of art, decorations, and furniture was destroyed. Now only decayed columns are standing covered by the unstoppable force of nature.

Many historians in Valabrad mourn the many artifacts, historical documents, and other elements lost in the Big War and the destruction that followed the first non-magical government for centuries.

Until this day, some visit the ruins to lament what was lost. They also suspect that soon Nature will take them all.
