Pope Tryammus XI

The final Pope of the Grand Diocese has a vast list of crimes and cruelties associated with his sullied name; abuses of power, cruelty, greed, degeneracy and attempts at spreading his influence through extortion and threats of divine retribution all lay at his feet. By the time he was elected to his position, it was whispered that he had poisoned three of his fellow bishops and had arranged for the destruction of a temple to the lesser gods of Deciline in an act of expurgation. Letters found after his removal and demise indicated his disgust with both of the Sisters but an especial loathing for the Patron Sister of Witches and Hedge-Mages--a bias that was more than unbecoming of the leader of the united Diocese and its religious consolidation.   His final act that broke the patience of even the gods was to outlaw all direct worship of the gods within the home; a systematic search for shrines of any kind was made to be made by the Knights of the Diocese and all idols were to be gathered and sealed away--after careful examination by the Pope and his cabal of close advisors for anything of value. In addition, those found to be worshiping any beings other the than gods were to be arrested and tried for treachery and heresy, a crime which found its inevitable conclusion in execution by beheading and burial with a stake through the heart.   With this declaration of intent, the Knights themselves refused en masse to carry out such a decree. Attempts were made and complete excommunication was applied to every member who refused to do as ordered but nothing could sway the Knights from their decision. This act of Pope Tryammus XI in fact yielded the exact opposite of what he had hoped, turning them into something more akin to folk heroes of the people.   Even as his grasp for power rose higher, the gods took notice and it was said that each in turn came to this most despised of men in forms to test and perhaps turn him from his ways. When all but one had come, it fell to Alutice, the final of the Seven, to implore the mortal to cast aside his malignancy. What passed between them is not known but what is known is that Alutice struck him down at the end of their meeting and sealed him within the depths of the Papal Palace, bound within a vault where he died alone.   His wraith haunts the halls of the Palace, a final judgment of Alutice, forced to watch as his office was removed and split into two halves, turning what had once been a single seat of power and strength into a bicameral position. He cannot act but may only watch for all eternity, seeing how even the lowest and basest of leaders of the theocracy are still more capable and just than he ever had been or ever could be.
