Aebarak Organization in Uto Daeg | World Anvil

Aebarak (eye-barrak)

Name translates to "Gold Shield" but commonly known as the "Gold Tyrants." Their symbol was a black pickaxe with an exaggerated curvature.

Structure

First, was the Golden Master, not to be confused with the Gold Lord, the leader of the Gold Coast. He transfers orders down to the Grand Foreman, who doles out responsibilities and quotas to the Great Foremen, who control small mines run by Lesser Foremen. The Grand knew the whereabouts and dealings of his Grand Foreman The Grand in turn would know only the dealings of the Master and the Great Foremen. The Greats would only know what the Lesser Foreman were dealing with. The Lessers would only know their own microcosm of the organization. The assassins and guards known as the Agom helped keep everything working smoothly and under control.

Golden Master

The head of the organization who controlled and organized shipments and the bandits in the rich Deadlands, this veritable monarch sat atop a pile of gold in a golden throne. Also called simply "the Master," this head could halt the outflow of gold and silver and brass and copper from the Deadlands on a whim if he so chose. In addition to paying and providing for the ones below him, he was also responsible for the raising of an army should the organization itself become threatened. Thankfully, with the use of basilisk and purple worm poison the job of the assassins, called the Arm of the Golden Master, or Agom, or Mairae Dornar in Dwarvish.

Grand Foreman

The administrative head of the organization, the Grand Foreman, sometimes referred to simply as "the Grand" or "the Foreman," requires extreme versatility and skill at manipulation, organization, forethought, and crisis handling. If something went wrong in the organization thoroughly enough, it stayed with the Grand Foreman else his head would roll. The Grand Foreman kept everything away from the Golden Master that needed to be kept away. It was his job to also be the highest boot-licker to the Golden Master, for if the Master even suspected mutiny or assassination he would have the Grand Foreman executed on these grounds.

Great Foreman

Sometimes called "the Greats" or "Greater Foremen," these arms of Aebarak ensured the Lessers paid their dues and controlled regions of the realm of influence. These tough and battle-hardened leaders led the mining quota and drank deeply of potions of strength or mining. These also possessed magically enhanced mining tools and weapons. Many of the Greats would squabble but none would stoop to the level of the Lessers. If a Great was suspected of treason, the Grand Foreman would adjudicate the matter and if necessary, kill them or demote them to rank of Lesser.

Lesser Foreman

These foremen were the heads of mining colonies or regions. Also known as "the Lessers." They had no idea of the bandits and marauders in the region and would often times skirt around them or run straight into their traps. In fact, this was the favorite method of ridding the organization of their inferior or impertinent leaders. These were hard working though avarice abounded in their inner circle. Often they plotted against their Great Foreman and only knew of the Golden Master as a legend, and the Grand Foreman as a person who probably existed and ran the whole thing.

Agom

This mysterious suborganization had its own culture and leadership. An offshoot of the Great Foremen, the Master at the time realized he needed a group of warriors to fight his battles and protect his lands. He formed this group and called them his "arm." Their many names are Arms of the Golden Master, Agom, Mairae Dornar, Golden Arms, and Golden Thrall. They held positions of power inside, but paid allegiance to the Aebarak, not the Golden Master. This caused significant distress when the Golden Master would order them to undermine the organization for his own wanton power and they would either refuse or turn on him. The names referring to being controlled by the Golden Master are in name only, placating the Golden Master's usually large ego.
Assassins
The most important and powerful of the Agom were the assassins called aevers. These hid in the shadows and were masters of disguise. Their unnatural ability to blend into the crowd resulted in the culling of hundreds of Foremen over the years. Their realm was the entire influence the Aebarak could muster.
Guards & Soldiers
The guards and soldiers were multifaceted. All were trained exactly the same and their names only vary due to their station. The guards were called aebarakor, or "Golden Shields," shortened to "Shields," while the soldiers were the aeagland or "Gold Swords," shortened to "Swords."
Bandits & Marauders
These roving bands are ordered by a captain who receives orders from the Grand Foreman on where to strike next. The captains know the Foreman is part of the organization and are sworn to secrecy under pain of death to never tell a soul. Of course, unbeknownst to them, diviners in the Foreman's control ensure no such things is ever told. The bandits and marauders that roam and raid the trade caravans inside and outside the organization are unaware they are technically attacking their own. They receive spoils and when one group achieves too much power the Grand Foreman simply uses others to cut them off or down. The Foreman is even known to have disguised as a local lord to get help from other lords in quelling particularly zealous marauders.

Culture

Aebers are seemingly bred and naturally selected with a propensity to the idea of the "honorable self." That idea is one of selfish gain but for the organization. So a person may step on the toes of his fellow as long as it produces more for himself and his mine or sphere of control. This results in a lower chaotic caste that approach more lawful qualities as it rises. They chiefly believe they have the power of the continent's wealth under their control and see everyone else as inadvertent vassals or sentient cogs in their detached clock.   Appearance. The Aebarak of low rank receive black tattoos of shovels on their forearms. High ranking officials receive gold tattoos of pickaxes on their right shoulder.

Public Agenda

They are seen to be the traders and miners of the majority of the continents wealth and resources. Although they fancy their gold and silver, they predominantly produce raw iron and heaps of coal. As such, they are seen as the providers of necessities and valuable commodities.

History

The organization started after the fall of Jour, the cloud-giant lich. It rose with the Seljüd Empire, being called upon to mine and smith the weapons of the kingdom. They had their hand in many dealings in the Seljüd court and often enacted treaties that benefited them as well as the empire. Their relationship was symbiotic.   After the Seljüd Empire fell to the dragonkin of the Deadlands, the Aebarak went into hiding. Their symbols and power can still be felt and many versed in the dark realm of crime believe them alive and well in the Deadlands.

Above all, fair trade. Above that, power.
