War of the Depths

War of Heaven and Earth

This is a work in progress!   Raging in the depths of Fernal, this 5000 year conflict between the Celestials and the inhabitants of Fernal continues to shake the entire core of the mainland. Even though all of the fightings takes place in the sprawling underground of Fernal, the mainland races are still affected as the deployment of Celestials and the attacks of vampires and werewolves to grow their forces is causing fear to grow in previously peaceful locations.

The Conflict

Prelude

Before the beginning of the war, the conflicts in Fernal were mostly self-contained and didn't reach the surface world or the floating islands above. However, after an unannounced attack on a Celestial who was working as an ambassador, the Celestials became much more engaged in the goings-on of the world below. A year after the fatality, the Celestials declared war on Fernal and allied themselves with the Vampires in hopes that they could establish a proxy rule and control the untamed underground.

Deployment

With the Vampires located in the South and the Shades located in the North, most soldiers are deployed towards the middle of the caverns of Fernal. These two opposing sides meeting in the middle where the Werefolk tribes reside leads to easy deployment and ambushes from the werefolk who fight most of their battles in their home territory.
The Celestials primarily deploy their soldiers through the underground networks that connect Fernal to the Faelands. Through these tunnels, small divisions of troops can be moved secretly into Fernal and into the Vampire territories without alerting the Shades and Werefolk.

Battlefield

While raids on capital cities have taken place, most battles take place in the middle of the realm of Fernal where the werewolves roam freely. Due to the overuse of magic in these areas, the ground itself has become structurally unstable, leading to massive fissures and unstable columns that collapse and cause massive damage when battles take place. Due to this increase in damage, all three sides have been seeking out new and creative ways to ambush enemies in less open areas.

Outcome

Established trade between the species of Fernal and the outside world has been completely cut off. The only unaffected race within Fernal is the Ionids, who insist on remaining as neutral in the conflict as possible.   The landscape of Fernal is also changing drastically, as overuse of magic causes new cracks and chasms to form in previously structurally sound locations.

Aftermath

The populations of Humans and Elves is slowly decreasing as werewolves and vampires attack and prey on the populations in order to create more soldiers to fuel the conflict. Due to this constant preying by the vampires, the Elves have permanently relocated in order to better protect themselves against attacks.   Sentient species of Giants, Orcs, and various other mixed races are also being affected at an alarming rate as The Hive seeks out and infects new hosts in order to create thralls. Due to this history of violence, the surface-dwellers live in constant fear, even though they are not actively near the battlefield where the war is taking place.
